“I’d come in and say hi, but I couldn’t find Pat’s swimsuit, so I’m running a little late.”

“No worries. Next time hopefully you won’t have to work so you can join us, too.” Spencer offers which makes Olive smile brightly as she leans in to give Pat a kiss before she races off to her car.

“Are you ready to go meet everyone and eat all the food?” Spencer teases Patrick as she tickles his belly.

“Yes, Miss Wilson. I’m escited to play with Penny!”

“I know this may be a little confusing, but as long as we are not at school, you are allowed to call me Spencer, okay buddy? And I’m glad you’re here to play with Penny, because she has been anxiously waiting for you and driving her dad and Chayse nuts.”

We are walking back towards the kitchen and as soon as Pat sees Penny, he squirms out of my arms and runs over to her. He told me that they have recess together and even though they aren’t in the same class, Penny is one of his best friends. It’s adorable to watch them hug and dissolve into giggles over something us grownups will never understand.

“Do you want to meet everybodies? That’s my daddy. His name is Cash but I don’t call him that because it would be silly. Chayse is my bestest friend and daddy’s girlfriend. You already know my Aunt Spencer, and she’s my Aunt Emerson. That's my uncle Reid and my Lando. They spoils me tons! Oh, and that’s my Papa! Hims and Daddy and my Uncle Reid builts me the best playhouse in the back yard. Do you want to go see it?”

“Yes!” Patrick is hot on Penny’s heels when he remembers he needs to check with me first. He turns and I’m about to say not alone when Cash catches what’s going on and beats them both to the door. Knowing they both will have adult supervision, I nod my head yes.

“Don’t worry, Unc. My girl is a handful and cannot be trusted near monkey bars alone. Cash will keep an eye on them.” Chayse cackles and I can't tell if she's kidding or serious.

I stay in the kitchen and help Spencer finish up the food while Chayse, Emerson, and Clint go outside to watch the kids along with Reid and Landon. When the food is ready, everyone helps carry it outside and it’s silent for the first time despite a moan or groan here or there as everyone stuffs their faces.

The only ones really talking are Pen and Pat as they enjoy their food at the miniature picnic table beside ours.

“I think it’s the bestest that your Uncle Mav and my Aunt Spence are boyfriend and girlfriend.”

“It is but it's weird. Mommy said they’ll kiss and that’s icky.”

“Yeah, my daddy and Chayse kisses a lot. Like a lot, a lot. And sometimes they have slumber parties without clothes.”

“Penny!” Cash yells as he shakes his head and avoids eye contact with Clint.

“Ew, my mommy says I’m not asposed to show my privates to girls. That’s why they’re your privacy.”

All the adults lose their battle of trying to keep their laughter in as we see the horror on both the kids' faces. Cash is desperately glancing from Chayse back to me like I have any idea how to handle it. Thankfully, Spencer is on it and intercepts before any other private events are shared.

“Yes, Pat. Your mom is right that you should not share your privates with others and others should not ask to see or touch yours. But it’s a little different with grown ups. Cash and Chayse love each other very much and are old enough to give consent, which means allow the other person to see their private parts because they trust each other very much. Does that clear things up for you?”

“I think so. Does that mean you and my Uncle Mav do that?” He looks confused and disgusted, and I can almost guarantee my face is reflecting his at this moment.

“That’s not really a question you should ask people, Pat.” I cough out.

“Don’t worry Patty cakes. I’m sures they do it too because they love each other but Aunt Spencer is your teacher so she just can’t say and can have favors. I bet your Uncle Mav will do that after they gets married.”

“That would be the bestest thing ever.”

“Alright, Squirt. That’s enough on this topic. Are you two ready for the slip and slide?”

"Awe, but this is the most entertaining cookout at the Wilson's that we've had in years!" Landon exclaims before dissolving into a fit of laughter.

Chayse flips off her best friend before she steps in to finally fucking save us all from this topic, but I’m really fucking shaken up after everything that just happened. Leave it to a couple of five-year-olds to essentially smack me in the face and find one of my biggest worries all the while exposing me for the fraud that I felt like when my immediate thought was that I was never going to marry Spencer.

I try to act as if nothing is bothering me, but I’m too in my head for the rest of the cookout. We’re there long enough that both Patrick and Penny are about to pass out standing up, so when Emerson offers to give Spencer a ride home, I tell her I think that might be a good idea so I can get Patrick home.

I think the time of avoiding what Spencer and I are doing has come and gone, but I have no idea what the fuck to do about it. All I know is that I am in no way ready to walk away from her, but if the picket fence, husband, and babies are still a priority for her, then it would be the best thing I could ever do.

Chapter Fifteen

Spencer

Thecookoutatmydad’s house went off without a hitch for the most part, but something seemed a little off with Mav by the end of the night. Although he didn’t say anything to me, I was surprised when he said it would probably be better for Emerson to take me home.
