“Good, good.”

It feels so dang awkward that I can’t stand it. “Did you need anything else, Sheriff?”

He shuffles his boots and I watch his leg muscles flex in his uniform pants, fascinated.

“I wanted to know if you’d like to go out with me on Saturday.”

He doesn’t ask it like a question. It doesn’t feel like a question either.

I smirk. “Are you asking me or telling me, Sheriff?”

His head pops up and the smoky fire in his eyes is burning brighter, hotter.

“Which way will get you to go out with me?”

I eye him and then smile. “Either. I’d like that.”

His firm mouth falls open. “Really? You’re not gonna argue with me or anything?”

I cock my head and move my leg around, then grab the crutches so I can stand. “Do you want me to?”

He grins wickedly. “Honestly? I don’t know. I like fighting with you.”

“Well, at least you’re honest,” I laugh and then groan when I stand. My leg isn’t broken but it was strained and badly bruised. So I’ve got to keep off of it and keep it wrapped up when I can.

He starts to move towards me but I shake my head. “I’m fine. But thank you.”

“How long will you be on those?”

“Hopefully just a week, maybe two.”

He nods and then his radio goes off. “Hey, Sheriff! We’ve got another fire. The old Sanborn place.”

“Shit! I’m on my way.”

He points at me on the way out the door. “Stay out of trouble, Red. I’ll see you soon.”

I smile and wonder what the hell happened. Maybe it was him saving me. Maybe it was the honest fear on his face when we were in that burning building. Hell, maybe it was the fact that he was human and he broke a rule! I don’t really know. But all the sudden all the whirling feelings that hit me every time I see him are stronger, deeper. And I want to see him. Want to talk to him.

Want to climb him like a tree and wrap myself around him while he devours me.

Jenny comes back around and she smirks when she sees me. “Maybe I should get the fire extinguisher! There’s a pretty big fire going on in here!”

I shoot her a dark look. “Very funny.”

She walks off, laughing, and grabs some more books to shelve. We’re still putting everything that we salvaged together. It may be another week before we can officially open. But I refuse to let this person get the best of me and deprive my town of the joy of reading.

I sit down and open a book that I’ve been eyeing for at least two months. Now that I’ve got the little street fair taken care of, I want to take it easy. Especially since they said the better I am, the quicker I’ll heal.

I’m drawn into the story in no time and I guess early on who the killer is. But the author really had you wondering why and how the whole way through. I loved it.

When I finally lift my head, Jenny’s already gone. She waved to me about a hour ago and I wish I left with her.

All of a sudden, the quiet and dark outside and in the dark corners of the big warehouse feel…threatening somehow.

I stand up and grab my crutches, feeling fear begin to move up my body and into my throat, tightening it so that it’s hard to breathe again.

I make myself turn off the lights even though I don’t want to. I leave one light on and then hobble over to the doorway, my eyes searching the dark.
