“I had to. It was the only way,” he repeated, his grip on me tightening even more. But I could see it in his eyes. He was lying to me.

“Only way for what?!” I demanded, pushing against him with all my strength, but he was too solid, too strong.

“I cannot say,” he said, his voice barely audible now.

Another lie. I could feel the tears pricking at the back of my eyes.

“You took away my memories and changed my life. You altered what you should not have. You played a game with me, I was your pawn. You caused more hurt than you ever could have imagined. Why?” I asked, my voice shaking with anger and betrayal.

“I took them away from you for my own agenda,” he finally admitted, and I felt a surge of rage and despair wash over me.

He had taken away my memories for his own agenda? What could he have possibly wanted with them?

I stepped back from him, finally free from his grip to put some distance between myself and him. The cold air around us grew irksome. His lack of touch sent an unwelcome shiver through me. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. The Goblin King, the one who had always been there for me in stories and dreams, had been playing his own game all along.

And I was just a pawn in it all.

“You. . . you deceived me,” I said, my voice quivered.

He reached out to me, but I pulled away. “Serra, please. You have to understand. I did it to protect you.”

“I don't want to hear it,” I said, my voice shaking with anger and hurt. “You took away my memories, you changed my life. And for what? For your own selfish reasons?”

He looked at me, his eyes filled with pain. “I never meant to hurt you. You have to believe that.”

I shook my head, feeling the tears prick at the back of my eyes. “I don't know what to believe anymore.”

“You never had to make a wish,” he said softly, his eyes searching mine. “I’ve always been with you, watching over you, waiting.” His words were like a punch to the gut, knocking the breath out of me.

“Waiting for what?” I demanded, my frustration coating my voice. I was tired of all the cryptic messages and half-truths.

“For you to be ready,” he replied, and the agony in his expression told me that he was struggling to hold something back.

“Ready for what? What are you talking about?” My irritation was growing with every passing moment. I had no idea what he was trying to say but I was running out of patience.

He glanced around the room- at the figures around us as they began to blur and fade away. “I can see now that it was a mistake. You’re not prepared for this, and I have to get you out. I have to get you away from here.”

“You’re not making any sense,” I said, taking a step back from him.

He reached for my hand, his fingers brushing mine. “Come with me,” he urged.

“No!” I jerked my hand away, the shock of his touch making me recoil. “Don’t touch me!”

“Serra, please,” he begged, and I could see the desperation in his eyes. The Goblin King was actually pleading with me, and it seemed like he had gone crazy.

“Leave me alone,” But the more he spoke, the more my irritation and frustration turned into anger.

“Leave me alone. . .” I said, my voice firm and unwavering. “I don’t know what game you’re playing, but I’m done with it.”

The room around us began to swirl, as if the world was closing in on us. I could feel the darkness creeping in at the edges of my vision. And then, before I knew it, I was falling into it, the Goblin King's desperate cries ringing in my ears as everything began to fade to black. But the room around us began to swirl. The pillars and marble melted away.

“Serra! Wait!” One last desperate cry from the Goblin King as the words he spoke in the ballroom hung over me and I fell down toward the open darkness.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

SERRA

The room was dark.
