“Ouch. You going to be mean to me all night?”

“That depends. You still haven’t told me whose wedding it is.”

“Solomon and Bec were stuck in a lab the last time they tried to get married.”

“Sol and Bec? But I thought they would have done it the week after.”

“They couldn’t. They had work that couldn’t wait, so now here we are.”

Sydney’s cheeks were hurting with the smile she couldn’t stop. “This is wonderful. I’m so glad we could be here for this. It’s beautiful.”

Aaron parked the car at the back of the house out of the way, and they knocked on the back door.

Jemi opened it looking stunning with her hair swept to the side and wearing a glittery evening gown. “Hey, guys.”

“Oh no,” Sydney said, looking down at her ripped jeans. “Aaron, you said I didn’t need to change.”

“Do you have formal clothes you could have changed into?”

“No, but I would have made you stop so I could get a dress.”

Jemi grabbed Sydney’s wrist and pulled her inside. “Aaron, the guys have gathered in the sunroom. You can get changed in the bathroom there. Sydney, I’ve got you covered.”

Jemi dragged Sydney up the stairs and into a guest bedroom where Bec was getting her makeup done. She looked stunning in a simple, long, silky white dress. Her hair was studded with glittering gems.

“Syd! You made it. I’d give you a hug, but I’m not allowed to move yet.”

“Congratulations Bec. I’m so glad I could be here.

“This way, Sydney,” Jemi said, pulling open a closet. “I’ve got a couple of options, but I think this is the one.” She pulled out a dark-blue backless dress with a fishtail hem. The top of the bodice had a sequin insert that added a touch of sparkle.

“That’s beautiful.” Sydney took the hanger and held the dress up against herself. “Although maybe a bit long?”

“What size shoe do you wear?”

“Seven.”

“Great. I’ve got just the heels. You remember where the bathroom is?”

“I do.”

“Okay then.”

A woman popped into the room carrying a baby swaddled in her arms. “How’re we doing for time?” she said, then noticed Sydney. “Oh, hi. I’m Emily.”

“Emily. This is Sydney,” Jemi said. “Emily and Liam worked with Sol.”

“Worked with is an understatement,” Emily said. “Sol helped save my life.”

“Yours too?” Sydney laughed.

“Don’t forget Liam helped save Sol’s too,” Bec said, keeping still.

“That’s quite a track record you guys have going on with your guests,” Sydney said.

“Hey, Jem.” Emily shifted the baby in her arms when he fussed. “Do I have time to give this little guy a feed? He won’t make it through the service if I don’t.”

“Of course. I think the living room is free if you want to settle yourself in there.”
