“Thanks. Nice to meet you, Sydney. I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll go get dressed.” Sydney hurried into the bathroom and slipped into the dress. It fit surprisingly well and when she turned to the mirror, she gasped. She’d never been interested in fashion beyond a white lab coat and couldn’t believe how amazing she felt seeing herself now.

There was a knock on the door. “Bec’s done with her makeup. If you hurry, we’ll have time to add a little color to your face if you want.”

“Yes, please.” She opened the door and Jemi gave her a once-over before nodding approvingly.

“Do me a favor and make sure I’m with you when Aaron sees you. I want to see the look on his face.”

Sydney didn’t fight the blush. “It’s a beautiful dress.”

Once everyone was ready, Jemi and Sydney left Bec with a few minutes to herself before the ceremony began. They could hear the guys talking near the bottom of the stairs and when they entered the living room, they found Emily wiping baby puke off Liam’s tux while the other men stood around chatting.

“Wait here. I’ll get a wet cloth.” Emily turned. “I told him not to hold the baby before I burped him, but he wouldn’t listen.” She hurried past the other women.

Aaron had been looking out the window at the guests moving into the barn. He turned and his mouth dropped open. “Syd. Whoa.”

Peter slapped him on the back. “Take a breath there, big fella.”

“Too late. I don’t have any left.” He walked toward Sydney. “You look amazing.”

Jemi cleared her throat. “Don’t forget you’re here for a wedding. Try to pay at least a bit of attention to the happy couple.”

Aaron’s eyes dropped to the floor, then took in the full length of Sydney for the second time. “Don’t want to. You want to get out of here, Syd?”

“Aaron.”

“It was a joke.”

Jemi clapped her hands twice. “Okay everyone. Time to get seated. It’s almost time to start. Solomon, you ready?”

Sol ran a hand over his hair. “I’ve been ready for months.” He headed for the door.

Aaron held out his arm for Sydney to take. He walked her slowly across the lawn, letting the others get ahead.

“I think we should get married,” he whispered into her ear.

She stopped and looked at him. “Are you proposing to me?”

“No. Just stating a fact.”

“I think you’re being influenced by this dress.” She grinned. “It is a nice dress.”

“Very nice. But no. It’s just that everything about you makes me happy, and I hate not having you as my wife.”

His look carried such a longing sincerity that she lost her breath. “You are proposing,” she whispered.

He put a hand on her cheek and brushed aside a tear that appeared there. “I guess I am. Sorry I don’t have the ring or anything. I wanted to do something special.”

“This is special. It’s spontaneous and from your heart.”

“I thought you didn’t like surprises.”

“I lied.”

“Then will you marry me?”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him close. “Yes. With all my heart.”

The End
