“I doubt it. He’s the one who got rid of him. I don’t imagine he had any interest in keeping track of him.”

“Okay. Anyone else? It doesn’t matter how little they might know. Even a regular cleaner.”

“There are a lot of people who know I’m working on a drug to help cancer patients, but we kept the other details very quiet.”

“What about outside the lab? Friends or family? Boyfriend?”

“No. I haven’t told anyone. I don’t even have a life outside the lab.”

“What about Dr. Pallon?”

“He’s got a wife and kids, but he doesn’t share his work with them.”

“Right. Okay. I might speak with him anyway.”

“He snagged an office space down the hall if you want to speak to him now. He should be there.”

“I might do that. I’m also going to have a chat with Gretta Lakeland about the article she wrote.”

“Good luck. She wasn’t interested in divulging her source to me.”

“She may feel differently about an FBI agent contacting her.”

“Maybe.” Sydney didn’t look convinced.

“You keep working. I’ll be in touch.”

Aaron looked into the open door of Dr. Pallon’s office. Pallon’s fingers were laced through his hair in a tight grip and he looked pale.

“Everything okay?” Aaron asked when he entered the room.

Pallon’s face paled further but he smoothed his hair and smiled. “Agent Pritchard. Good to see you again. Yes, I’m fine. Better now that we’re settled in here. Just trying to figure out a problem. What can I do for you?”

“I’m putting together a list of everyone who might know anything about Sydney’s work.”

“Don’t know that I can be much help. Up until that newspaper article, I always thought it was just Syd and I, but I guess I was wrong.”

“What about Theo Robinson?”

“I thought he may have leaked it to the newspaper, but he wouldn’t have anything to do with the threat to Sydney. He was just a stupid kid.”

“Must have been pretty smart to get posted with you and Professor Davis.”

“Sydney has found something big, sure, but no one will know until she publishes her work and Biotech develops it. Until then, all we get are average students.”

“Do you know where I might find him?”

“Who knows? I wouldn’t waste time on him if I were you, though. I can tell you right now he wasn’t involved.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“’Cause he was just a kid. He was nice enough besides the snooping, but not the type you’d expect to be involved in a kidnapping. If you’re going to find who’s behind this, you're wasting time looking at him.”

“Can you think of anyone else who might know something, even if it’s small? Sydney said you have a wife and kids. Would they know anything?”

“No. Definitely not. I don’t take my work home with me, and if I told them about what we were working on now, all it would do is make them afraid. I haven’t told anyone anything. I swear.”
