“I don’t think that’s how it works.”

“Doesn’t matter, though, does it? It’s what is happening.”

Aaron wanted to comfort her. He believed her. Finally, everything made sense. He could see the full picture and it meant that whatever wrong she did wasn’t what he thought. He could see her as the person he’d always wanted to see. But there were so many feelings fighting for attention, he didn’t know which one to grab hold of. So he settled on the safest one.

“Okay, so that doesn’t mean we can’t make it right again.”

“That’s not possible anymore.”

“But that’s why we’re here.”

“I thought we were here because we’re fugitives.”

“There is that. But I’m sure we can find an answer. We can make all of this right again.”

Sydney shook her head. “That’s very noble of you, but I’m prepared to pay the consequences for my action. The world’s not perfect or fair and bad stuff happens that we have to face. I’ve been running away from it, but I don’t want to anymore. I just want it done.”

“Listen. It’s late. Why don’t we sleep on it? See how you feel in the morning. By then Knightly will have answers from Dr. Pallon and we can get this whole mess sorted out.”

“Maybe.”

“Go to bed. Get some rest. Nothing will have changed in the morning and we can figure out what we’re going to do from there.” He reached out his hands to take hers, pulling her from the seat.

She resisted but finally allowed herself to be lifted from the chair. “I am very tired. I guess you’re right.”

He didn’t let go of her hands. “I’m really glad you told me the truth. And I’m sorry that I thought the worst.”

“You didn’t think the worst. You interpreted the facts exactly as they looked. But I am glad you pushed. I’ve been carrying this around for so long on my own. I hate to imagine what you think of me, but I’m more relieved than worried now that I’m not on my own with it anymore.”

“I think you’re pretty amazing, and you’ve spent too much time alone.” He pulled her closer.

“So have you,” she whispered.

His jaw tightened. He knew he shouldn’t kiss her, but he couldn’t think of a good enough reason not to anymore. So he let go of her hand and reached behind her neck, pulling her toward him.

Her body pressed into his as her arms slipped around him and the world spun as they kissed until his control tumbled.

He pulled back, taking a breath, but kept her close. “We shouldn’t have done that.” He didn’t sound convinced.

“Probably not,” she said, still leaning into him. “But I think I’ll sleep better tonight.”

The side of his mouth lifted. “I won’t. Which is why you should probably go get some sleep.”

She smiled and kissed his cheek. “Good night.”

Chapter19

Aaron wasn’tready for bed yet. Not after that kiss, so he returned to the living room and found Peter sitting alone, reading.

“Everyone’s gone to bed?” Aaron said.

Peter studied him. “Yeah. I’m surprised you’re still up. You’ve had a big day of saving the world.”

Aaron looked out the window. “Nothing is saved yet.”

“I don’t know that Sydney would agree. She’s an interesting woman.”

“She is.”
