“You seem more relaxed.”

“Do I? I don’t feel relaxed.”

“Is there anything going on between you two?”

“No.”

Peter chuckled. “Why do you bother lying to me, Aaron?”

“I’m not lying. She’s in danger and I’m trying to get her out of it.”

“But you can’t pretend you didn’t have a dopey look on your face when you walked in here.”

“You weren’t meant to see that. I didn’t know anyone was still up.”

“Do you know what you’re going to do?”

“No idea. I’m hoping they’ll be able to get some answers from Dr. Pallon, Sydney’s supervisor.”

“I didn’t mean about that.”

Aaron crossed his arms. “That’s too bad because I won’t talk about the other.”

“Okay, we’ll talk shop. So you need a way forward. How about we pray?”

A cynical laugh escaped Aaron’s lips before he could contain it.

Peter set his book aside. “That’s very unlike you. You always had a stoic reliance on God. Praying used to be the first thing you did.”

“You haven’t seen me in a while.”

“It hasn’t been that long.”

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me. Tell me what’s changed.”

“Nothing changed. I just finally realized that I’m no more special than anyone else.”

“That is a very glass-half-empty view. I’ve found God to be more of a glass-half-full kind of guy. Or actually a glass-overflowing.”

“When did this Sunday school class begin? I missed the announcement.”

“I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I allowed you to wallow in self-pity. You’re no more special to God because everyone is top priority in his eyes. God isn’t like your dad.”

“That’s not what I said.”

“But that’s what you mean.”

“I’ve had the same dad my whole life, and I didn’t used to feel like this.”

“When was it that your feelings changed?”

“I shouldn’t have said feelings. It doesn’t really have anything to do with them.”

“Okay, then when was it that your viewpoint changed?”

“Can we not do this? I haven’t felt this good in I don’t know how long and you’re ruining it.”
