“Is that all?”

“Does it matter? Whatever I think of her, she could be flying out of the country right now, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“That’s not true. We could pray.”

“I’ve tried. I’ve prayed for other people’s safety so many times, I don’t know what to pray anymore.”

“That’s okay. I can do the talking. What’d you say?”

“I have no objections.”

“That’s charitable.”

“I’ll be honest with you, Peter. I’m hanging on by a thread. I feel like nothing I’ve ever done to protect the people in my life I care about is ever enough. I’m a failure.”

“Let’s see what God has to say.” Peter lowered his head. “God, if you’ve got anything for us, please help because we’ve got nothing. You care about Charlie more than we do, so let us know if there’s anything we can do. Amen.”

“That’s it?”

“Did you want to add more?”

“No. That pretty much sums it up. I like the way you pray.” Will managed to laugh.

“I find it helps to keep things simple. Sometimes, if I talk too much, I get caught up in the words and forget about who I’m talking to and what He can do.”

“Hang on.” Will jumped to his feet.

“What?”

“I had a thought. It could be nothing.”

“Or it could be everything. We just prayed asking God for help, and now you have a thought, and you want to dismiss it? It could be God’s answer.”

“Then I might have an idea. There’s nothing more we can do here. I’d like to pay a visit to the police station.”

“Lead the way.”

“Agent Will Fitler?”

Will stood and shook the hand of the man who came through the door. “Good to see you again, detective.”

“If you’ve come here for a favor, you got it. That drug bust you called us in for was huge. The press is loving it. Everyone’s still talking about it. It’s been a real boost for the station.”

“Glad I could help, and yes, I do have a small favor to ask.”

“Shoot.”

“That guy you brought in who was connected to it, Skipper? I need to speak to him.”

“Ah yes, Benedict Xavier Renaldo. No wonder he went by Skipper. He had quite a mouthful for a name.”

“Had?”

“He’s no longer with us. Had an incident over at the prison.”

Will’s head dropped. “Oh. I can’t say I’m surprised. He knew more than he let on.”
