The outside didn’t shout grandeur, but as soon as they set foot inside, she gripped his arm.

He was used to the chandeliers that reflected off the marble floors and the rich wood walls.

“Is this place for real?” she whispered as he led her to the bank of elevators.

He smirked. “Wait until you see your room. By the way, your first assignment is to get over your awe. This place is nothing to Maddison. You’re used to it.”

“Yeah. But can’t I have a minute?”

“I’ll give you one minute.” He could remember when he and Maddy had moved in here at the start of the operation. It was all a job to her. If she had been impressed, she hadn’t shown it.

When he unlocked the door to the suite, he watched her face as she entered.

She stopped in the door, her mouth open.

“You don’t like it?” he joked.

“This has to be the wrong room.”

“Maddy’s been playing the role of a powerful, well-connected, and wealthy businesswoman. If she stayed in a motel with glitchy neon lights, it wouldn’t sell the part, would it?”

Charlotte turned in a circle as she entered the room. “People actually pay to stay in a place like this? This is nuts.”

“Yeah, it’s a touch extravagant.”

She zeroed in on him. “Are my tax dollars paying for this room?”

Will laughed. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Do you stay in here?”

He couldn’t tell if her voice carried trepidation or not.

“No. Maddy and I aren’t playing a married couple. I’m in this hotel but a different room. You’ll be pleased to know it’s not as fancy as this one and a lot cheaper.”

“Jealous?”

She was such an odd mix, switching from wonder to sass in a single breath. It was refreshing. She was nowhere near as intense as her sister.

“Nah. It’s too rich for my blood. Maddy’s a natural with this stuff. I find this all too stuffy for my taste. Give me a dingy cabin in the woods anytime.”

“So you’re an outdoorsy guy?”

“When I can, I like to have adventures that aren’t work-related. You?”

“I don’t mind getting my hands dirty. But I do prefer to have a flushing toilet.”

“You definitely have one of those here. There might even be a bidet, but I wouldn’t know.”

Charlotte walked to the window to admire the view. “Who exactly is it Maddy’s meant to be? And what’s your part?”

“Maddison is an importer of various items. Some legal. Some not. I’m her personal assistant.”

“And this bad guy—Antonio?”
