“Yeah.”

“He just believes you?”

“No. That’s what we’ve been doing for the past year. We’ve engineered a disguise so we could sell it. We arranged some big wins for her in the industry and got the attention we needed. In the end, Antonio approached Maddy.”

“Wow. That’s some impressive work. I can see why Maddy doesn’t want to let it all fall apart. You’ve invested a lot.”

“It’s still not worth it if we all wind up dead in the end.”

“But we won’t. How long have you known each other?”

“You mean for the part?”

“Yeah.”

“I’ve been her PA for five years.”

“And she isn’t too young? I mean, we’re not even thirty yet. Sounds like she’s accomplished a lot in a small space of time.”

“She inherited a fortune in petroleum from her dead father, which gave her a big head start. Then she invested it well. Maddison has a brilliant mind for business. It’s in her blood.”

“Why Maddison and not you?”

“Antonio loves women who are young, beautiful, and powerful. He was thrilled to find all three in Maddy, especially in someone so eager to work with him. I’ve got all the files from the case. You’ll have the opportunity to study them so you know what’s happened so far.”

“Yes, you said.” She looked back out the window. “Maddy must love this. This job is just right for her.”

“She’s very good at it.”

“Can I ask, is she doing okay? I mean, she’s obviously not doing great now, but before the incident. Is she good?”

Will put his hands in his pockets. “I’m not sure she’d be happy with me sharing personal stuff. I know you’re her sister, but—”

“No. You’re right. I shouldn’t have asked. I just want to make sure she’s okay. We aren’t close. Haven’t been for a while. She’s had trouble dealing with some stuff, and I wanted to make sure she wasn’t suffering for it.”

“As far as I know, she’s fine. She doesn’t tell me much on a personal level, really. She tends to keep private stuff private. But she’s not usually in the bad mood she was with you. Normally, she’s very charming. ”

“Yes. She’s very charismatic. Everyone has always loved her. And you two? Have you ever…”

“What?”

“Sorry. You probably think it’s none of my business.”

“You’re wondering if we ever had a relationship?”

“Yeah.”

“You’re right. It’s none of your business. But no. She’s not really my type.”

“She’s always been a big flirt.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Only in the childish way that it got her a lot of attention.”

“You guys aren’t kids anymore. But that face I made when you thought we were dating was genuine. I like her a lot, and she’s my partner, so I’d do just about anything for her. But she’s really not my type. I’m not hers either.”

“I must sound stupid for asking.”
