“Where you were safe.”

“I’m comfortable enough there most of the time. Even though we haven’t had the best relationship lately, and that has hurt, it’s been good in a way because it’s helped me to stand on my own and be more confident.”

“I’m glad to hear that, because for this job, you’ll need a lot of confidence.”

“I’ll certainly try my best.”

“I won’t overwhelm you tonight with too much detail, but let me show you your wardrobe.”

“I hope we’re still the same size.”

“Looks like it to me,” he said, leading her into the bedroom.

She stopped in the doorway and stared. “This place is ridiculous.”

“You said that.”

“The bedroom is bigger than my living room at home.”

“What about the closet?” He pulled open the doors. “You can sit in here if you’re more comfortable. It’s probably closer to the same size.”

She looked in and laughed. “Yeah, actually it is. I don’t live in a big house, but this is—”

“Ridiculous. I agree, but there you go. You want to try something on?”

“Not really.”

“Too bad.” He slapped her arm. “This is your first practical lesson.” He walked into the closet and nudged a pair of red stilettos with his toe. “Try these, and…” He riffled through the dresses, eventually pulling one out. “Little black dress ought to do it. Although, you can’t count on me to dress you after this. This is the extent of my knowledge. You’ll have to get further instructions from your sister. Other than your wardrobe, I’m your guy.”

Charlotte picked up the shoes. “I don’t even think I can walk in these, let alone that dress.”

“Like I said, Antonio likes strong beautiful women. So, that’s what we have to give him. Or we can let Maddy know it’s not going to work.”

She pulled her chin in. “Do you want me to do this or not?”

“Nope.”

“I thought we agreed we’d try?”

“Only because you and Maddy insisted.”

“But you want me to give up?”

He put a hand on his hip while still holding the dress out for her. “If you have any doubts, then you should call it quits now. There’s no room for it here. I don’t think you understand what you’re in for.”

“And here I was thinking we were getting along.”

“We were. We are.”

“But this won’t work if you keep trying to eradicate my confidence.” She swiped the dress from him. “If you’re willing to teach me, then I can learn. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an outfit to try on.”

“Suit yourself.”

Charlotte glared at his back only because he couldn’t see her, then flopped on the giant bed when he closed the bedroom door behind him.

“God, what am I doing?” She had a tendency to be determined at the worst of times, and now she’d gotten herself into this and hadn’t even sought His counsel. Her escapade in Venezuela, despite its positive outcome, had somehow given her too much boldness, and she couldn’t even take credit for what had happened. All she’d done was go on a simple missions trip. God was the one who’d saved her from the trouble she’d ended up in.
