Somehow, He had not only led her into the situation but led her out of it again and brought down a trafficking operation that saw hundreds of girls’ lives saved. But she’d never agreed to it. It wasn’t something she’d gone after. It was something that had happenedtoher. It’s the reason she was never able to get into the specifics with her sister. God was too big a part of the whole thing, and Maddy would never let Charlotte bring Him into any conversation.

But this time, things were different. If God didn’t want her to carry on, she couldn’t ignore that, no matter how much she wanted to help Maddy.

“Should I tell Will I won’t do it? He’d be happy, but Maddy wouldn’t.” Part of her wanted Him to say yes. It would be easier to go back to her normal suburban life, even if she was bored with it. But she couldn’t ignore the part of her that didn’t want to pull out.

“You want me to stop?” she said to the ceiling as she lay back on the bed. She didn’t get a sense one way or the other, so she grunted herself back into a sitting position and lifted the dress. It wouldn’t hurt to at least try it on. There was nothing wrong with walking around in a dress and a pair of shoes. That was at least one thing that wouldn’t get her into trouble.

She quickly stripped out of her clothes and pulled the dress on. It was tight, but judging by the cut, it was meant to be. At least it fit.

The shoes were next, and she had to sit on the bed to get them on. Then, standing, she balanced on the balls of her feet. It helped that the heels pushed her forward.

She walked toes first toward the full-length mirror where she held her breath. She barely recognized herself. The dress hem was below her knees, but the way it hugged her body gave her the look of a woman who knew what she was doing. She could walk into any boardroom and look like the boss.

She lifted her chin. She might be doing this to help, but that didn’t stop her from enjoying the part while she was on her own. No one had to know the smile that lit her face as she appreciated how amazing she looked.

Her shoulders slipped back, her hip dropping into a pose. It was incredible what an outfit did for confidence. Maybe she could do this after all.

Then she took a step, and her ankle turned. She righted herself before she fell, holding the wall to balance.

“Thanks for the reset, God.” All the pride she’d felt had melted away in one move.

She paused to straighten and compose herself before approaching the door in small awkward steps.

Now she had to face Will. A flush warmed her cheeks at the thought, and she whimpered, pressing her hand to her face.

Why did he have to make that comment about being more attracted to her than Maddy? She was definitely attracted to him. But they barely knew each other. It didn’t mean anything. People were attracted to each other all the time.

She also reminded herself that, with Will, she was always on the back foot, and she didn’t like that. He might be nice to look at, but he was impossible to impress. This whole thing would be an uphill battle, and she wouldn’t let him intimidate her. She’d prove to him that she could do it. It didn’t matter if she felt embarrassed or insecure. This was all a part, and she could play it.

“That doesn’t mean I have to like it,” she mumbled as she pulled the door open.

Will turned from the window, and his eyebrows lifted as he looked her up and down.

“What do you think?” She was afraid to take a step. Her ankles were already wobbling, so she remained still.

His lips bunched together.

“What is it? Have I got something wrong? I don’t look like her?” She glanced down at herself and ran her hands down her hips and thighs. “I don’t know how else to wear it.”

“No. You look great. It’s not that. It’s just…you’re you, but you’re her.”

She took a couple of tentative steps into the room. “I can’t walk.”

“You have all night to practice. Take a few laps around the living room. You’ll get the hang of it.”

“I can’t believe Maddy wore these things. She hates heels.”

“I know. She said the same about you.”

“Is that why you're smiling? I hope you find this amusing.”

“I do.”

She growled as she stepped carefully around the room. “This is not easy.”

He crossed his arms as though assessing her every move.

After several passes, she said, “I don’t think I’m getting any better.”
