“You really are mad at me. What I mean to say is, I’d call that above average. You’re in great shape.”

“You still wiped me out.”

“I know.”

“Now that you know where I’m at, does that mean I get the rest of the day off?”

“No. There’s no time.”

Her head dropped between her shoulders. “Okay. But can I at least have a little break?”

“Sure. Go have a shower, and I’ll be by your room shortly with your study material. We pushed the limits of your body. Next you get to stretch the limits of your mind.”

“I’m exhausted.”

“Hey, if you’re not up to it, say the word.”

She punched him in the arm, and he feigned injury. “Ow, you said your arms were tired.”

“You’re lucky they are. Give me an hour to get my head together.”

“I’ll give you fifteen minutes.”

“Jerk.” She gave him a nasty look, but he could see the smile hidden beneath it. She said she wasn’t a flirt, but underneath the hostility, this playfulness felt an awful lot like it.

“I’ll meet you upstairs.”

Will grabbed his bag and headed for his room after she left for hers. He had a box ready to bring to her and checked the time on his watch with a grin. He’d make sure he was at her door in fifteen minutes, as promised.

His punctuality had nothing to do with the job. He just wanted to see the petulant look on her face when she feigned annoyance.

There was a ding from his bag, and he dug out his phone.

Call me as soon as you can. I’ve got another lead.

Charlotte was all but forgotten in the next moments as he tugged his bag onto his shoulder and moved into a deserted hall to make the call.

“Tony. What’s up? What have you got?”

“Before I say anything, I want you to know it’s a longshot.”

“You say that every time.”

“And I need to know you’re not going to get your hopes up.”

“The last tip you gave me was a longshot and it didn’t pan out. I get the gist.”

“You said you wanted anything that might be related.”

“I did, and I appreciate whatever you give me. Worked out well for the local cops anyway. They got a good bust out of it.”

“Were there any girls at all?”

“No. Just drugs. However, there is a connection. I tried to get the guy to talk, but he was too scared.”

“You didn’t press him?”

“I did. He wouldn’t budge. I would have had to work on him for a few days, and even then, there’s no guarantee Kelly would be part of the information he finally gave to me, so I left him with the police.”
