“I’m really sorry.”

“Doesn’t matter. I’ve been tracking these guys for a long time. I’m used to being let down.”

“You ever think of giving up? I mean, it’s been years. She’s probably…”

“Dead. I know.” Will tipped his head back and stared at the ceiling. “I know I’m being unreasonable, but every time I decide to give up on it, I’m compelled to keep going. I just want to know what happened.”

“Same thing that always happens. She trusted the wrong person. It happens all the time.”

“But I should have known. I should have been there to stop it.”

“You’ve got to stop beating yourself up about it. You were a kid. There was nothing you could do.”

“I was eighteen.”

“Yeah, a kid. If you were a trained agent looking for the signs, maybe you could have done something, but back then, no.”

“And that’s why I’m doing this now. I’m more experienced and equipped now. I’ve been part of teams that have done impossible things. This is just one more. If there’s a chance of saving her, I won’t let her keep suffering.”

“If she’s still alive.”

“I know you’ll think I’m crazy for saying it, but I believe she is.”

“Not crazy. But I do think you’re desperate.”

“Desperate enough to follow any lead.”

“You know I’m on your side, so whatever you want to do, I’m here to help. But you need to understand that this tip I have now is pretty light. Lighter than the last.”

“I got it. You don’t want me getting my hopes up. Now spill.”

“There’s a hotel downtown. I heard they’re hosting some girls. A few familiar names popped up. Guy at the counter by the name of Fred can arrange a room if you bring your own girl. That will get you on the right floor. Once you know the floor, maybe you can find one of the girls. Maybe you’ll get lucky and get a solid lead. I’m sure Maddy would be happy to help.”

“She doesn’t know.”

“You haven’t told her? Why not?”

“She wouldn’t like it. We’re working on something else. But it doesn’t matter. She’s out of commission anyway.”

“Maddy? Why?”

“She was attacked.”

“What? Is she okay?”

“They did her over pretty bad, but she’ll recover. It will just take time.”

“Man. I’m sorry to hear that. I might be able to find a girl to help.”

“That’s okay. I’ve got someone in mind. I think this could be just the job for her, too.” It would be a great way to see how Charlotte worked undercover without putting too much pressure on her.

“Good luck. Fill me in once you’re finished.”

“Thanks. I will.”
