“Do you remember me?”

“How am I supposed to remember every guy?” She looked at Charlotte and gave her a sultry smile. “A face like that, though.” She winked. “I wouldn’t forget.”

She was trying to make Charlotte uncomfortable. He could tell it was working, but Charlotte remained calm and tried to appear aloof.

“I wasn’t a client of yours. I know it was a year ago, but I got you out of all of this. You remember? What are you doing back here?”

“It pays better than waitressing.”

“So youdoremember?”

She shrugged. “I got a lot on my mind. Can I have a cigarette?”

“No. You remember what we talked about the last time we met?”

“Maybe.”

Will pulled a bill from his wallet and handed it to her. She snatched it.

“How about now? You remember now?”

She tucked the money away, then slowly looked at him. “You know they’ll kill me if I tell you anything.”

“They’ll never know.” Will’s pulse quickened. She knew something.

“I can’t tell you much.”

“Whatever you know is more than what I’ve got now.”

“Last I heard, they took a shipment overseas.”

“When?”

“Late last year. Just after we spoke last time.”

“Where’d they go?”

“South America, I think.”

“Country?”

“No idea.”

“Come on, Marie.”

“I told you, I don’t know much.”

“Is there anything else you can tell me?”

“Yeah, but you’re not gonna like it.”

Will steadied himself. If Marie confirmed Kelly’s death, he couldn’t be sure how he’d react. He always knew she might be dead, but not knowing meant there was always hope. At least he’d have closure. “Tell me.”

“It was a small group, and they all went willingly.”

“Willingly?”

“That’s what I said.”
