“And you know she was part of that group?”

“No, but I’m pretty sure.”

Will nodded. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“You gave me what you could. You know, I can still get you out of here. You don’t have to live like this.”

“You can’t save everyone. But if you’re ever looking to let off some steam, you know where to find me.” She winked again at Charlotte, who looked away.

Charlotte waited until they were back in the car before asking the question she’d been desperate to ask but wasn’t sure if she’d get an answer. “This woman you’re looking for, who is it?”

Will kept his focus on the road. His face was set hard. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Okay.” She waited a beat. “Was the information Marie gave you helpful?”

“I guess you could say that. At least I know a year ago she was still alive.”

“That was hard to see. The life she chooses to live. It breaks my heart.”

“Yeah. It’s tough. You do what you can, but you can’t force people to make different choices. You were really good in there, by the way.”

He’d said that already, but she understood he wanted to change the subject. “Thanks.”

“But you shouldn’t have put yourself in harm’s way. Marie could have hurt you.”

“You would rather I let her go?”

“No.”

“Then all you have to do is say thanks.”

He was still focused on the road, but she could see the grin. “Thank you.”

“And all I did was trip her. I heard the commotion and went into the hall. She ran out and I heard you yell. I put my foot out, and when she fell to the ground, I jumped on her. I figured you’d be out soon. Although it did feel like it took forever.”

“I’m glad you came.”

“Me too.”

Chapter11

“Your face has changed color,”Will said while he stood in Maddy’s door with his arms crossed.

“I thought it was time for a change.”

“Purple suited you, but I don’t mind the green. The swelling’s gone down too. You’re almost recognizable.”

“It had to happen one day. I’m just glad my face doesn’t feel like a balloon anymore. At least you can still tell me and Charlie apart.”

“When I first met her, it was hard, but now? I don’t know. I don’t think you look as much alike as you think.”

“You say that now, but wait until one of us pretends to be the other. No one can ever tell.”

“Maybe.”
