He hesitated, then stepped forward. “I don’t mind.”

When they reached her room, she put her key in and pushed the door open an inch. “I had a really great time tonight. I know it was a training exercise, but of all the things you’ve made me do, this was by far the best.”

“Madeyou do?”

She shoved him playfully but internally chided herself. She shouldn’t be flirting. “You know what I mean.”

Before she knew what was happening, he leaned forward and kissed her cheek.

She drew in a breath, and they locked eyes. It should have been awkward, but it wasn’t. She waited for more, but it didn’t come.

“Goodnight,” he said. His voice was barely over a whisper. “You did great tonight.”

“Thanks. You too—I mean—thanks.”

She sucked her bottom lip into her mouth and bit down, nodding before she went inside and closed the door softly behind her. She would have slid down the door if she wasn’t worried he’d hear her and know that her insides were melting.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. She wasn’t supposed to be disappointed he didn’t kiss her for real.

She took off her shoes and forced herself to her bedroom without looking through the peephole to see if he was still in the hall. If he was, she’d open the door, and then what? This was a job. That was all.

Will walked around the corner in case she came back out. He couldn’t be sure of his restraint at that moment. But he remained in the hall for a couple of minutes, frowning at the floor. Charlotte was different from any other woman he’d ever known. It was the first time in a long time he could remember not wanting the night to end, and it took every ounce of willpower he had not to go back to her room just to see her face one more time.

He scratched his hand through his hair, then pulled out his phone. He’d have to end this, and then…and then he had no idea.

He sent a text before returning to the elevator.

I need a favor. I’ll stop by your office tomorrow.

Will buttoned his suit jacket as he stepped through the revolving door of the corporate building.

He smiled at the receptionist. “Afternoon, Carly.”

“Good to see you again, Will.”

“Would you mind calling Tony and letting him know I’m on my way up? He’s expecting me.”

“Certainly.”

He stepped away from the desk, then turned back. “And can you do me a favor?”

“Maybe. Depends on what I get in return.”

“My eternal gratitude.”

She laughed. “What’s the favor?”

“If I come in here with anyone in the next day or two, can you pretend you don’t know me?”

“I’m intrigued.”

“Does that mean you’ll do it?”

“Is this work-related, or are you trying to impress a girl?”
