“It will be. Trust me. Now, go get dressed.”

“I don’t feel ready.”

“You never will. But Antonio is jumpy. If we don’t do this now, there’s no point continuing. We’ll have lost him. It’s up to you. If you want out, just say so.”

Charlotte started toward the bedroom, but stopped. “But you believe it’s safe enough?”

“It should be, but it will never really be safe visiting him. But you need to make up your mind about this because you can’t go in there unsure. If you go, you put everything into it; otherwise, we don’t go.”

Charlotte let out a long, slow breath and closed her eyes. Now that this was real, she was conflicted.

God, what do I do?

“Charlotte?”

“I’m going.” She hurried into her room and shut the door.I can call this whole thing off, God. Just tell me. I don’t know what to do.

She dropped to her knees beside the bed, praying and waiting for God to give her a clear direction. What she felt was a wave of peace wash over her. Her confidence returned, and she stood.

God was with her, and Will was with her. She wouldn’t let Maddy down by allowing fear to control her. She would do this, and it would open a door with her sister that had been closed for a long time.

She got ready, checking, then rechecking herself in the mirror before opening the door. “I’m ready. How do I look?”

He frowned. “You look like Maddison.”

“Good.”

“Good. Right. Sure,” he mumbled.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. Let’s go.”

Charlotte fidgeted with her skirt, pinching it and then flattening it as they drove.

“I know you’re nervous,” Will said. “But it’s better if you start pretending you’re confident now.”

She scooted in the seat so her back was straight. “And you’re sure Antonio will buy it? That I’m Maddison?”

“No.”

“What?”

“Am I sure? No. I told you this could be dangerous. We can’t be sure of anything.”

“Why are you angry all of the sudden?”

“I’m not.”

“Well, if you want me to be confident, then stop talking like that.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“Tell me I’m going to do great. Tell me you know I can do it and that nothing will go wrong. It doesn’t matter if it’s true, just tell me.”

“You want me to lie?”
