“What you did when you saw her?”

“I’m pretty sure my jaw was on the ground. Maddy told me she had a twin named Charlie. I thought she meant she had a brother. Then Charlotte was standing there in the hospital room.”

“And you reckon they’re nothing alike?”

“Not much besides the way they look. But they’re both stubborn as mules.”

“Got it. Can’t wait to meet her.”

Chapter14

Charlotte flippedthrough a report from when the operation with Antonio began. “Aren’t there any pictures of him? I’ve been through everything multiple times, and it only just occurred to me I have no idea what he looks like.”

Will had been quizzing her on Antonio for the past hour. “We’ll have some somewhere. They must have been filed because we don’t need them for the case. We already know what he looks like. I’ll get you a picture, but it doesn’t really matter. You’ll know him when you see him.”

“Can you at least give me a physical description?”

“He’s tall, late sixties, with grey hair. He’s well-groomed and wears expensive suits.”

“How do I know the difference between a cheap suit and an expensive one?”

“You can tell.”

His phone rang and he glanced at it, then gravely at Charlotte.

“Who is it?” she said.

“Antonio’s guy. I wasn’t expecting to hear from them yet. I’d better take this.”

“Why would he be calling?”

“I don’t know.” He stood and answered, walking to the window. “Hello, this is Will.”

She looked back at the report she’d been studying while he talked. The amount of data she’d memorized in a short time was a lot.

She glanced up at Will, who was looking out the window, listening. Since dinner the other night, she’d become increasingly distracted by his presence.

After Will had kissed her cheek, despite her fatigue, she’d spent several hours lying in bed, trying to understand what it could mean and only succeeded in wallowing in confusion.

It could have been how he treated everyone. In some countries, it was unusual not to kiss a cheek. Or maybe he’d gotten caught up in the dinner and was being polite. But a nagging uncertainty remained that he’d done it because he’d been wanting to do it to Maddy. It was a stupid thought and immature. He’d made it clear he had no feelings for Maddy, and she had no reason to believe he was lying.

She looked back at her work and sighed. She had more important things to do with her life than indulge in insecurities connected to her sister.

“I know it’s short notice,” Will said as he turned. “But we’ve got to go.” He grabbed his jacket off the chair. “You need to get dressed.”

“What? Now? Where?”

“Antonio needs reassuring. All you have to do is show your face and look like you know what you’re doing.”

“But we haven’t talked about how I should act yet.”

“Do what you’ve already done. Exactly like when we went to dinner.”

“Exactly?”

“You know what I mean. And remember, we’re pretending you can’t talk. You’re not well, so if anything seems off to Antonio, we can blame your mild illness. Other than that, all you have to do is be confident.”

“You say that like it’s simple.”
