Charlotte took a deep breath as she dropped into a nearby chair. “You haven’t spoken to Will?”

“Not today. Last I heard, things were going well, but judging by your behavior, that’s changed? Did the training exercise with Tony not go okay? Sounded like things got out of hand.”

“That’s an understatement. Will told me I was meeting Antonio. When Tony threatened to murder us, I got Will out of there and pulled a gun.”

“What?”

“It gets worse. When Will came back into the room trying to take my gun and talking all friendly to Tony, I thought maybe he had betrayed you and me, and he was really working with Antonio. That’s why you got the phone call, because, by the end, I threatened both of them with a weapon I wasn’t sure how to fire.”

Maddy’s mouth opened. “There are so many questions I have. I don’t know where to start. So it really was a training exercise?”

“Yes and no. Turns out, Will didn’t think I was cut out for it. He expected me to run away scared and give up on the whole thing.”

“But you didn’t.” A slow smile spread across Maddy’s face. “I wish so much that I had been there. Tell me every detail.”

“You’re missing the most important part of this.”

“No, I’m not. The most important part is that my sister is awesome.”

“Tony wasn’t going to kill me.”

“You didn’t know that. How’d you get Will out of the room?”

“I told Tony that Will had no part in my deception and that he was useless to me and that Tony should let him go. But he was Tony, not Antonio. It didn’t matter.”

“I am so impressed. But where does the gun fit into all of this?”

“I found a gun in your closet and brought it with me.”

“I bet Will hadn’t planned on that.”

“No.”

Maddy let out a painful laugh. “I wish I could have seen that. I really do.”

“It was embarrassing.”

“Please tell me you pointed the gun at Will.”

“I did, and it’s not funny. I could have hurt someone.”

“It’s funny because it’s over and no one is hurt. Just let me lie here and enjoy the moment. I don’t have much joy currently.”

“At least someone finds amusement in all of this, but I’m angry, and apparently so is Will, although he has no right to be.”

“It may have been ill-advised on Will’s part, but I can understand why he did it. He wanted to make sure you wouldn’t crack under pressure, and you didn’t.”

“That’s not why he did it. I told you. He expected me to quit after what was supposed to be a terrifying experience for me. It doesn’t matter that I held it together. That’s why he’s mad, because his plan didn’t work.”

Maddy nodded and closed her eyes. “I can’t say I’m surprised.”

She was silent after that and kept her eyes closed. Charlotte reached out a hand and rested it on Maddy’s arm. “You okay? Are you in pain?”

“I told you, I’m managing it.”

“I’m sorry. I wouldn’t have brought this to you, but I didn’t know what else to do. It must be costing you a lot to speak to me.”

“I’m okay. Do you still want to go through with the plan?”
