“I just think you should cut him some slack.”

“Why?”

“I’ve known him a long time. He’s got a lot going on. He’s just trying to protect you.”

“By deceiving me? I could have shot you.”

“Yeah. I won’t forget that anytime soon. But he didn’t do it to be cruel. He wants to keep you safe.”

“There are better ways. And I’m determined to do this job whether he likes it or not.”

“Will said you and your sister are nothing alike, but you’re both about as headstrong as each other. I’d hate to see you two in a fight.”

“It’s not pretty.”

“I don’t imagine it would be.”

“That’s why I’m determined to do this. She needs my help, and I’m going to do whatever I can to get this across the line.”

“Well, best of luck to you.”

“Thanks. Do you have any idea how I can convince Will to get on board?”

“Me? No, I’ve never been good at changing Will’s mind about anything. If you want to alter his plans, ask your sister.”

Chapter16

“Can I come in?”Charlotte said with her head poking through the door into Maddy’s hospital room.

“Nice of you to ask. Everyone else comes barging in.”

“So that’s a yes?”

“You think I won’t let my own sister into my room? Especially when she’s doing me a massive favor and saving my job?”

“I’ve tried calling. When you answered Tony’s call, I thought maybe it meant you were avoiding me.”

“You got me. I’m not always in the right frame of mind to speak to you. It’s not you. I talk myself out of answering because I’m afraid of what the conversation might be like. I’m sorry.”

“No need to apologize. I understand. We haven’t had a great track record of conversations over the last few years. And you have to spend a lot of your mental energy on your recovery. But you’re looking much better. The swelling is almost gone.”

“I’m as good as can be expected, I guess. I’m managing the pain okay.”

“And mentally?”

“I didn’t get brain damage.”

“No, but you’re stuck in bed. That must be torture.”

“Let’s just say I don’t think the doctor likes me very much right now. I’ll have to buy him a nice thank-you gift once I’m out of his hair.”

“I think they’re used to grumpy patients.”

“Maybe, but you know how I can be.”

Charlotte laughed softly. “I’ll pray for them.” As soon as the words came out, she regretted it. She’d meant it as a joke, but it wasn’t a joke she could have with her sister.

Maddy appeared unfazed. “How’s the training going?”
