“Why not?”

“I’m not a good person.”

“But you are. You’re not doing that shit anymore, Kyla. You’re out,” he reminds me.

“I know, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t supposed to be behind the gun that night,” I point out. He shakes his head.

“No. You weren’t. God had a plan, Kyla. This is his plan. You. Me. Axel. He’s giving me a second chance, and I don’t think I can let it go that easily.”

“I don’t want you to let us go.” My admission shocks me as much as Jake's.

“I didn’t plan on it, Kyla. I just need time,” he tells me.

“I know you do. And I have that.”

Chapter 15

Mystic

Axel’s in bed, sound asleep. As we sit around on the patio, Kyla grabs beers from the fridge for the guys.

“Stop looking at her,” I growl as Smokey eyes her up and down.

“What? I’m just lookin’.”

“And now you’re done.” It’s a warning, and he takes it as one and chuckles, sitting back in his chair. I glance around at the rest of the guys as Kyla walks out, passing beers to everyone. She holds one out to me, and I shake my head. That’s when I see the small smile curl on her lips. I’m trying to do better for her and Axel. I’m not drinking like I was, even though I know one beer isn’t going to hurt me.

“This is Kyla,” I announce, nodding toward her. “Kyla, this is Smokey, Declan, Grave, Blade, Burn, and Ruger. These are a few of the guys who will be helping me out.”

“Nice to meet you all,” Kyla says as she drops onto the couch next to me. I slide my arm around her waist and pull her closer to my side. The others notice, and I don’t miss the nods or smiles.

“She’s off limits,” Smokey states, noting the closeness.

“Shit, we all have old ladies anyway. We don’t need that extra drama,” Ruger adds, and the guys all agree.

“Good thing. She’s mine,” I tell them. Kyla shifts a little closer to me, and I sigh in relief. I know our relationship is rocky at best, but she is mine, and I don’t plan on letting her or Axel go.

“What’s the plan?” Declan asks as we sit around the table out back.

“We don’t have one. That’s what we’re here for. I need them all dead,” I reply.

“All as in the father too?” Burn asks.

“Yeah. Him too.”

“And you’re okay with that?” Grave asks Kyla.

“I’m beyond okay with that. If my father finds Axel or me, we’re both dead. He doesn’t care if I’m his family or his blood. He cares about money, and I stopped bringing that in when I left.”

“Fuck. That’s messed up,” Ruger utters.

“Very. I don’t know how to get to them,” I say.

“He has to go out at some point.”

“He does, but he’s always covered as far as security goes. This was five years ago too. I don’t know what’s changed since then,” Kyla offers them the information she has. She talks a little more, telling them about what it was like back then, but she doesn’t know how things are being run now.

“We’re up against an army,” Burn adds as she continues.
