He chuckled. “Not like that. I was more worried about him finding me buried to the hilt inside you. Your dad does not strike me as the kind of man who just lets something like that go. He would have killed me. Rather, he would have hired someone to kill me.”

I laughed. “Yes, I think you’re right. He would have locked me in the basement.”

“Just know, I would never reject you,” he said. “I’ve wanted you for too long.”

I patted his cheek. “We should probably go. I don’t want them to think we’re doing that.”

“She had errands to run.” He shrugged. “She’ll be gone a while.”

“Still, this is kind of weird.”

We both got up and left the den area. Together, we walked to the front door. I got another chance to see the beautiful apartment. It was stunning. Maybe I was just envious. I was having a hard time adjusting to my tiny place after growing up in the lap of luxury.

“So, are you busy tonight?” he asked as we waited for the elevator.

“No,” I replied.

“Can I take you out?” he asked.

I smiled. “I would like that.”

“Good, because I don’t want to waste another minute,” he said. “And while I don’t expect you to put out on the first date, I’m just going to be honest up front—I want you.”

Heat flooded through me. “I want you, too.”

We walked through the lobby, and I felt like everyone knew what we had been doing upstairs.

He walked me to my car and gave me another kiss. “I’ll pick you up at six?”

“I’ll be ready.”

“Wear something hot,” he teased.

“I will see what I can find.” I laughed.

I got into my car and headed for home. I felt like I was floating. I was so happy. I couldn’t believe it. After all these years of being just friends, he finally asked me out on a date. My heart was pounding with excitement as I thought about the possibilities that lie ahead.

I’d always known he was special, but I never imagined we could have something more than just friendship. I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear as I drove home. For the first time in a long time, I felt truly alive. The possibility of a new romance with someone who knew me so well was exhilarating. He was the one man I felt like I could trust with my whole heart. He was the one person on the planet I knew would never hurt me. He would lay down his life for me. That was not something I could say about anyone else in my life, not even my mom or dad.

I couldn’t wait to see where this journey would take us. Maybe we’d fall in love and live happily ever after, or maybe we’d remain the best of friends. But either way, I was grateful for this moment, for taking a chance on something new and exciting. It was an itch to scratch. I knew there was always the chance we would figure out we weren’t all that compatible as a couple. But I didn’t think either of us would be able to get it out of our heads if we didn’t at least try. We had to explore the idea.

I was thrilled to go on a first date with the man I’d considered to be my best friend for years, and I couldn’t wait to see what the future held. I felt better about things. Even if we didn’t end up with our happily ever after, I was pretty sure we would remain friends. We both valued our friendship too much to let anything come between us.

When I got home, I called Izzy. I was excited to tell her about my meeting with Luke. “We’re going out tonight!” I exclaimed when she answered the phone.

“Who’s going out?” she asked.

“Me and Luke!” I couldn’t find the words. “He’s into me. We kissed. We’re going on a date!”

“Wow, that’s a change,” she said with a laugh. “What happened?”

“Julia asked me to go to her house to work on a gift for the bride,” I said. “When I got there, Luke was there. She left and we talked. It was a total setup.”

“And you’re not mad?”

“I was, but I can’t be,” I replied. “He told me he feels the same way. He wants a relationship. We’re going to see where things go, starting tonight. We’re going out on our first date. We made out again. I cannot wait to get this man in bed. I’m so turned on and hot for him. I can’t believe this is actually happening!”

“I’m very happy for you,” she replied. “How much coffee have you had? You are talking a mile a minute.”
