“Alright, I’ll let him know,” I said. “See you in a few.”

I leaned in for a quick kiss only to be pushed away. “We both know that’s not a good idea.”

“I’m so glad they are having a short ceremony,” I muttered and walked away.

Fifteen minutes later, I was standing next to Leo with Emmy standing across the aisle from us. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was beautiful. I barely noticed Caroline walking down the aisle. When I finally did give her my attention, all I could think about was Emmy in a wedding dress walking down the aisle to join me. It was going to be us one day. That was my vow right then at that moment. We were going to be married. Period.

Her father was essentially okay with our relationship. I wouldn’t say he was thrilled, but he and I talked. I explained I was looking out for Emmy because I loved her, not because he told me to or because Emmy needed it. I loved her and was taking care of her because it was what two people in love did. He did feel better about her being out from under his watchful eye. There was still some animosity between them about her refusal to go into the family business, but I was sure he would come around eventually.

I would do it right and ask for her hand in marriageafterI got Joey’s blessing. I didn’t want to completely piss the man off. I knew he loved Emmy, even if he had a strange way of showing it. I had no doubt in my mind Emmy would say yes. We both knew we were going to be together forever. I glanced into the audience and caught Emmy’s father watching the ceremony with tenderness in his eyes. I still believed he was all bluster most days. He was a softie at heart.

After the ceremony, we made our way into the reception. That was when I finally got to steal a kiss. “That was so beautiful,” she sighed. “Wasn’t Caroline beautiful?”

“Who?” I asked.

She laughed and shook her head. “Stop.”

“I barely noticed her,” I said. “And that’s the truth.”

“I need a drink,” she replied.

We got a couple of vodka sodas and watched as Caroline and Leo had their first dance. For a moment, it was just the two of them on the dance floor, lost in their own little world. I could see the love Leo had for Caroline. Three months ago, I didn’t really understand it. I knew I loved Emmy, but it was different. After being with her the last couple of months, I understood. Leo looked at her like his heart would explode if she didn’t return his love. I felt the same way about Emmy.

“That’s going to be us one of these days,” I told her.

“Oh, you think so?” she teased.

“I know so,” I replied confidently.

“When?” she asked.

I looked at her. “Whenever you want. Tomorrow if that works for your schedule.”

“Oh, hmm, I think I have to wash my hair tomorrow,” she joked.

I kissed her again. “You know it’s going to happen.”

“I do.” She sighed. “I can’t wait for the day that it does. I cannot wait for us to be husband and wife.”

“Do you want a big rock or something dainty and elegant?”

“You know I don’t care,” she replied. “I want whatever you choose. It could be piece of string and it wouldn’t matter. All that matters is that it comes from you. That it’s a sign of our love.”

“Be careful what you wish for,” I joked. “Dance with me. I want to molest you a little. If we’re doing it to music, I can get away with it.”

“Just remember my dad is right over there,” she said with a laugh as I pulled her onto the dance floor.

I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn’t believe I was the one dancing with the most beautiful woman in the world. She was mine. All mine. As we swayed to the music, I couldn’t help but think about our future together. I wanted this moment to last forever. I wanted to dance with her like this at our own wedding one day.

She looked up at me and smiled, and I knew she could sense the thoughts running through my mind. “I really like this song,” she murmured softly.

“Me too,” I nodded as the slow ballad was belted out by the woman on stage.

The world faded away as we moved to the music. It was just me and her, lost in our own little world. I felt so lucky to have her in my life, and I knew I’d do everything I could to make her happy. Our bodies rubbed together, fitting perfectly as usual.

As the song came to an end, I pulled her closer and whispered in her ear. “I love you.”

She looked up at me with her eyes sparkling with love and affection for me. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life making her feel this way. “I love you,” she replied. “I will always love you.”
