When Canaan invited Elizabeth to stay with him, he thought he was helping a friend. Never could he have imagined that he would be inviting his mate into his home.

Having her so close at all times was way harder than he would have thought possible.

Canaan was at a loss. How was he supposed to behave? Should he tell her? Would she panic and leave for good? He couldn’t allow that. Elizabeth had a hell of a fight ahead of her, and if he wanted to keep her safe, Canaan had to keep his shifter side and everything that meant a secret.

He hated the very notion of keeping a secret from Elizabeth. Not only because she was his mate, but she wasn’t the kind of woman who would easily forgive. Not with everything she had been through with her ex.

And now, here Elizabeth was, quizzinghimabout his ex.

Canaan and Ginny hadn’t been together long. Just long enough for him to realize she wasn’t intoFantasy Warriors. For her, it had been a boring job that involved a lot of lying. It had broken his heart more than their failed relationship that one of his favorite characters didn’t even care about her role.

“If you’re up for it, we can settle in and watch a movie. Maybe you want to sleep. It is getting pretty late.”

She grabbed another slice of pizza and munched on it before replying, “I don’t know if I can sleep. I’ve had a hard time lately.”

He nodded his understanding. “You’re safe here.”

“I know. But my head has a hard time accepting everything that’s happened in the last six months. My body is exhausted, but my mind hasn’t stopped spinning.”

“Well, maybe we can do a quest to tire out those thoughts of yours.”

Elizabeth hesitated for a bit as she continued to eat. “I don’t want to impose. You’ve already done so much for me.”

“Impose? Girl, be real. If you were at home, we would be questing already.” He grinned and slid the pizza box over to her. “Come on. Fuel up.”

“You make it very hard to resist,” she said, taking another slice.

Canaan’s heart skipped a beat. Was Elizabeth flirting? Probably not. Not with everything she was going through. He was only getting his hopes up because she was his mate.

Keep your shit handled, wolf. This isn’t the time or place.

He wouldn’t take advantage of Elizabeth. His only motivationhadto be to keep her safe … and only that.

Canaan led her to the computer bay and sprawled his arms wide. “Where would you like to set up?”

“I don’t know. Wherever. I don’t mind.”

Because Canaan was a sucker for punishment, he pointed to the computer right beside his gaming one. Elizabeth cracked her fingers and stretched out her neck. “All right. Let’s do this.” She settled in the chair and grinned up at him. “I’ve never gamed with someone in real life.”

“Well, there won’t be much difference,” he replied.Only now, I can smell you, hear you breathe, and watch you move. The game hadn’t even started yet, and he was already distracted.

They booted up the game and began their quest, each of them taking on their usual characters. “Why is your screen name Blood Wolf?” Elizabeth asked.

Canaan’s neck heated up. Was this when he told her he was a wolf? It waswaytoo soon. He licked his lips, playing for time.

“Is it because your family owns Blood Moon Agency? Even that is a very interesting name. Why blood moon? Moon and wolves usually go together, I guess.” Elizabeth’s attention was wholly on the screen, and she only spoke to fill the silence. Yet, her words had gutted Canaan with their meaning.

Elizabeth Mooney, Queen_Luna as she was called in the game, was his moon, and he was her wolf.

Moon and wolves usually go together? You have no idea, Queenie. You really have no clue how right you are.

“I always felt a bit like a wolf,” he replied vaguely.

She laughed softly. “Well, you sure got the lone wolf thing down out here. Do you ever get lonely away from others? Don’t you miss your family?”

He shook his head. “My family does a lot of dinners and reunions, so I don’t usually have the time to miss them. I find the city too crowded. I get all panicked in Manhattan. It’s loud, and there are so many people …”

“I get that.”
