“He’s the master of computers. I rock the courtroom, but he does magic with tech. I’m sure he will be able to recover the files from your computer, no matter what your slimy ex tried to do. That will go a long way to establish that Jordan stole it from you. While he does that, I need to find out everything I can about your ex. I need to know everything from his shoe size to when he takes his shits. I am not joking. I need to know what makes him tick.”

“Oh-kay …”

“It might sound invasive, but I need to understand his motive. Did he steal it for money? For a better position in the company? That sounds like a solid place to start, but I don’t build my strategies on solid places. I use certainties and cold, hard facts. Is there anything you can tell me about him?”

“He got engaged not long after we broke up.”

Rylee shook her head. “Wow, this guy is a piece of work. I hate to ask this, but do you think it’s possible he was playing you the whole time?”

Elizabeth’s gut clenched, and all the air flew out of her lungs. Her cheeks went hot and red as Rylee’s words sank in. “Doyouthink that’s possible?”

Rylee reached over and patted her hand. “I’m sorry, Elizabeth. My mouth runs away from me sometimes. It’spossible, yes. If there’s anything I learned in my line of work is that people will do anything for money and status. This is why I need to know his motivation.”

“Well, I don’t know how much help I can be. I’m starting to think I never knew Jordan at all.”

Rylee patted her hand again. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to put your whole relationship in question. It’s harsh, but if you want to win this, you’ll need to develop a thick skin.”

“Right. Any tips on how to grow that?”

“Girl. I was the only daughter in a family of four. I came by mine the hard way, so I don’t have any tips. But in the absence of hatred for Jordan or a thirst for revenge, you can surround yourself with people who are in your corner. You’ve got Canaan, which basically means you have the Wolverton-Lupine pack at your disposal.”

“Pack?”

Rylee waved her hand. “You know, the protection folks, the lawyers.”

“Right.” Elizabeth took a steadying breath. “I have no clue who the new girlfriend is. I think he said her name was Bella.”

“That could be a nickname. I’ll look into it.”

“Wait,” she said. “Before we go anywhere with any of this, we need to discuss your fee. I don’t know how much you bill per hour, but I’m not a millionaire.”

Rylee threw her head back with a laugh. “Youdoknow my brother is covering this for you.”

Elizabeth shook her head. “I can’t accept that.”

“Fine, then consider yourself my pro bono case for the year.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because some fucker messed with you, and by principle, I don’t like that. No man should use his relationship with a woman the way Jordan did. He did you dirty, and it would be my actual pleasure to wipe the courtroom floor with him.” She beamed at Elizabeth with a wolfish grin.

“Shit, you must really be terrifying for opposing counsel.”

“You’re the sweetest, most innocent little thing. I don’t see how anyone could think you’re stealing company secrets.”

Elizabeth cleared her throat and hesitated. “Actually, there’s something I need to tell you.”

“Oh?” Rylee’s brow quirked up.

“Well, I’m notthatinnocent.”

Rylee tensed. “Go on.”

“After Jordan passed off my work as his, I put a camera in my office. We’re not allowed to do that, but I wanted to see if anyone was coming into my office.”

“Shit. Okay. That’s not strictly legal, but not exactlyillegal. A bit of a gray zone. Did you ever catch someone going into your office?”

“Only Jordan a couple of times, but no. Not really.”
