“Tell me where to find this camera, and I’ll get into your office.”

“You can do that?”

“Honey, I’m your lawyer, and I can eat geeks for breakfast. Of course, I can do that.”

Elizabeth nodded and explained where Rylee could find the hidden camera.

“You’re not as meek as I thought. I like that. It bodes well for what I’m gonna ask you to do. This is a list you need to get through.” She slid over a piece of paper. “I’ll give you a call later on today, and I want at least six of these done. Capisce?”

Elizabeth nodded. “Of course. Do you think I can win this?”

“Let me see what Evans Electronic Limited Services has before I answer that. Just know that I will do everything in my power to help you, Elizabeth.” Rylee was serious and intense. It was a look she had seen on Canaan a few times now. “You can lean on Canaan,” she continued. “You can trust him.”

Elizabeth blew out a breath. She didn’t need Canaan’s sister to tell her that. She already trusted Canaan, which was scarier than she cared to admit.

TWELVE

CANAAN

From one of the huge windows in the computer bay, Canaan watched Rylee drive away before he joined Elizabeth in the kitchen. She sat at the table, deep in thought, rapidly tapping her fingers on her empty coffee cup, her lower lip pulled between her teeth.

He took a few seconds to study her features. Even scared and stressed, she was beautiful. Surely, thinking that made him the world’s biggest jerk.

You’re trying to save her. In my book, that makes you a hero, his wolf said.

The previous night while he had gone for a run in the woods, Elizabeth had nearly seen him shift back into his human form. He had stopped the shift as soon as he spotted her standing at the window.

He wondered how she would react if she found out. Would she run? Would she take it in stride? He had given her enough clues the night before with his talk of moons and wolves.

It was daring, but the longer she was in his home, the harder it was to keep the truth from her. He didn’t want to be a sleazy liar like Jordan. And a lie by omission was still a lie.

Canaan knew he couldn’t add to Elizabeth’s stress, and surely, telling her that shifters existed would be a bit too much. Maybe he would tell her once she was cleared from the espionage charge.

All he had to do was calm himself and keep his feelings controlled.

He cleared his throat. “I hope she wasn’t too mean,” he said, cutting through Elizabeth’s thoughts.

Elizabeth was startled but quickly smiled at him. “No, your sister is a force of nature.”

He chuckled. “She’s definitely something. She’s smart as hell and twice as scary.”

“She gave me a list of things to do before this evening. Can I use one of your computers?”

“Of course. So long as you don’t mind me working right beside you.”

“No, not at all. Actually, there is something on this list that is just for you.”

“I know. She texted me. You need the laptop from your house. Mel is already on it.”

“She needs to look under the little moon statue in my bedroom, just beside my dresser. I have a memory stick there. It has the footage of Jordan sneaking into my office.”

He grabbed his phone and tapped out a message with impressive speed. “She’ll grab that, too, but it might take a while. Your place is under surveillance right now.”

“What?” Her gut clenched.

“You had to know that was going to happen when you vanished. There are people out there looking for you. Law enforcement.”

“Won’t they ask Rylee where I am?”
