“Chopper?” she squeaked.

Canaan chuckled. “Yeah.”

“As inhelicopter?”

“Yup.”

“And who is driving this aircraft?”she squeaked even higher.

“I am.”

Canaan was pleased when she gasped in shock again. “You can pilot a helicopter?”

“I sure can,” he replied, puffing out his chest at the impressed look in her eyes.

“A real one? Not a gaming one?”

He threw his head back with a laugh. “A real one. I have a pilot’s license for small planes and helicopters.”

“When do you find the time to do all of these things?”

He shrugged, pulling into a small airfield and parking the truck next to a metal warehouse-looking building. A helicopter that looked more like a gadget from the future sat on the tarmac.

She swallowed hard. “This thing flies?”

“Definitely. It’s like floating in the air with nothing around you.”

“Great,” she mumbled, “just what I was wanting.”

They settled inside, and he slipped on the pilot’s earphones with an attached microphone. “Blood Wolf to Red Wizard. T-minus ten minutes before arrival.”

“Red Wizard to Blood Wolf. Received,” a deep male voice replied. “See you soon.”

Canaan winked at her before he pulled the lever and lifted the chopper off the ground.

FIFTEEN

ELIZABETH

Elizabeth had never been in a helicopter before. In fact, she hadn’t even been on a plane. The ride was beautiful, and it gave her a clear view of the forest. It was much bigger than she had originally thought. It went on as far as the eye could see.

“Do you own all of that?” she asked when they landed.

“Yeah, I do. Well, some of it is mine, and some of it belongs to my family.”

She whistled low. “Wow. No wonder you like it up here. I wouldn’t want to live in the city if I could just go on a heli flight over my forest whenever I feel like it.”

He chuckled. “If you think that’s good, just wait until you see where we’re going.”

The ride across the forest was short, and soon, Canaan was helping her down from the whirlybird. He led her to a big four-wheeler. “You need to get on that to get to the house.”

“Whose house?”

Canaan shook his head. “Not yet.”

“I am really not liking this whole secrecy thing you’ve got going on, just so we’re clear.”

“Noted.” He helped her up and took off like a shot.
