It was a burn that enflamed every part of him. He stepped them forward until Elizabeth’s back pressed against the wall. One of her legs wrapped around his waist as her hands went into his hair. He cupped her breast, rubbing his thumb along it, hoping to feel her nipple pebbling under his touch.

“Elizabeth,” he groaned. “Go to bed.” His breathing was staggered and hard.

She nodded and slid down from him. “Yeah. Good idea. We wouldn’t want to get into trouble, would we?”

Oh, he definitely wanted to get into trouble with her. “Something like that,” he grumbled, turning toward his own bedroom. As soon as he heard Elizabeth turn in, Canaan snuck out of the house for a run. It was the only thing that could keep him from knocking down her door for more.

SEVENTEEN

ELIZABETH

Wow.

Elizabeth couldn’t formulate another thought as she retreated to her bedroom.

Wow.

Kissing Canaan Wolverton had been like nothing she had ever experienced in her life. He kissed with his entire soul, and she was sure that if she had pushed for more, she would be in his bed.

Is that what I want?

It was probably a terrible idea to fall into bed with the man helping her clear her name. Surely, Rylee would advise her to keep things professional. After all, it was Elizabeth’s heart that had gotten her into this mess in the first place.

She brushed her fingers against her lips, tasting Canaan there.

Earlier that day, she’d been on the cusp of a meltdown, but he had surprised her with the helicopter ride and a visit with some of his family members.

But it was the video game he shared with her that played funny tricks on her heart.

Canaan Wolverton was not what he appeared to be. He might have the home of a lone wolf, and he might even have the body of a god, but he had a heart of gold and a creative side that brought out his sensitivity.

He was too good to be true. Elizabeth knew he had to have a flaw … one she just hadn’t spotted yet. No man could be perfect, and Canaan was too close to perfection … his kiss was too.

Elizabeth tried to fall asleep, but no amount of pillow punching and tossing and turning helped. She was too keyed up to sleep. With a sigh, she slid out of bed and padded quietly to the kitchen again.

This time, she didn’t go for water but for something stronger. She poured herself an inch of scotch and sipped it by the light of the moon in front of one of the huge windows. She watched the soft night breeze moving through the trees, hoping to see the wolf again. If she did, she would see it as a sign.

But a sign of what she couldn’t decide.

“Maybe if I see the wolf, it means that Canaan is the man for me.” She snickered at the foolish thought. She was getting more fanciful with every sip of her drink.

Canaan and his Blood Wolf gaming persona were all she could think about. She nearly missed the movement through the trees. When she caught sight of the creature, she almost dropped her drink.

Does that mean Canaan is the man for me?

The wolf padded closely to the house and onto the back porch. Elizabeth held her breath. She didn’t know enough about wild animals to be sure, but she couldn’t believe wolves could be so brazen as to sniff around a house. Didn’t they fear humans?

The wolf sat back on his haunches and winced in pain. Elizabeth’s eyes widened as the tawny fur melted away to be replaced with smooth human skin.

The wolf was no longer a wolf.

Gone was the long muzzle; there were no pointed ears and clawed paws.

There stood a very naked Canaan.

Right where the wolf had been.

“What the fuck?” she cried, shaking her head. She looked down at the scotch. Was she hallucinating? She opened the backdoor, blinking at the mirage of nude Canaan. She couldn’t look away as she tried to make the illusion dissipate.
