“Elizabeth,” Canaan was startled to see her.

“Are you real?” she shook her head. “Did you just … Weren’t you a …” She couldn’t finish the thought. It was too ludicrous to be real.

“Shit. This isn’t exactly how I wanted to tell you.”

Elizabeth couldn’t breathe or move. All she could do was stare at a very naked Canaan. He grabbed a pair of pants from one of the lounge chairs and slid them on. When his male parts were covered, he took a tentative step toward her.

“Wolf?” she said, scrunching up her face.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She opened her mouth to reply, but nothing came out.

“Elizabeth, please say something.”

She shook her head and raised a finger to silence him. “Nope. You don’t get to dictate how long it takes me to process this.”

He nodded, wincing. “Sorry.”

She shook her head again before stuffing her fingers through her hair. “Have I gone insane? Has the stress caught up to me? And now I’m hallucinating a wolf man?”

“No,” he took a step closer. “It’s not like that. I’m a wolf shifter. I should have warned you that my family and I are different.”

“Are you telling me Rylee is a wolf too?”

“And Mel.”

Elizabeth’s eyes widened, and she gasped. “Wow. I walked right into a wolf’s den. I am one silly woman.”

“Not at all. This is the best thing you could have done. Shifters, especially wolves, we’re territorial. You’re well protected here, and no one will dare mess with you. Not while you’re my guest.”

She crossed her arms and took a few deep breaths. “Blood Wolf. That’s your screen name. I get it now. I also get why you have a whole video game about wolves. It’s your experience. It’s …” she sighed, “absolutely insane.”

“Is there anything I can do or say to help right now?”

Elizabeth snorted before dissolving into a fit of giggles. “I have no clue. I’m just shocked. Every day I think to myself, girl, your life has gone crazy. I think this has to be as wild as it will get. Nope. I’m wrong. Anything else you want to tell me?” She raised a brow daringly at him.

He winced before quickly shaking his head. “No, there’s nothing.”

“You’re lying.”

He gulped.

“Why are you lying to me? What else could there be? Are you a superhero? Because, honestly, you’re a millionaire wolf and best friends with Hollywood royalty. I’m not sure I can come up with anything more than that.”

“There’s nothing.”

“I. Don’t. Believe. You.” She jabbed her finger in his bare chest. “Tell me, or …” Her nostrils flared on a deep inhale. “Or I will leave and take my chances with Jordan.”

Canaan flattened her hand against his chest. His skin was warm and smooth, but it was the spark of static that made her gasp. She didn’t move away, but Canaan stepped closer. “I don’t think you’re ready for what comes next.”

“Seriously?”

“It’s a shifter thing.”

“Of course it is,” she rolled her eyes. “Out with it. I don’t think there is anything you can say that would make this worse right now.”

“This isn’t how I wanted to tell you.”
