“Yeah, well, my life isn’t exactly unfolding how I thought it would. We don’t always get what we want. Maybe your millionaire wolf life has been charmed, but the real world isn’t like that.”

“Elizabeth …” his whisper made her shiver.

“Tell me,” she insisted. Though she straightened her spine, her insides were melting. She didn’t know what he was about to tell her, but she was resolved to hear it.

“When you hear what I have to say, remember that I tried to warn you.”

“Fine.” Her mind spun with the possibilities. Maybe the video games were based on an alternate reality in another dimension. Maybe the gamewasan alternate reality, and all her decisions really controlled someone’s life. Maybe …

“Wolf shifters, just like every other shifter, have something called the mate sense.” He paused as he waited for her to understand, but his words were lost on her. What did that have to do with another dimension?

“The mate sense is when our instinct, our animal, senses that we’ve met our mate. The person we are made for. The one we’re meant to be with.” He was silent again. This time, Elizabeth sensed where he was going. Damn, forget an alternate reality; she was digging this reality.

She held her breath. “When we were gaming together all those months ago, I liked spending time with you. I thought we were kindred spirits, but the second I laid eyes on you, I knew. You’re my mate.”

“What the actual fuck?”

Canaan took a step back. “I told you. It’s a lot.”

A wave of laughter came out of nowhere and overtook her. Elizabeth doubled over with the giggle, and no matter how hard she tried to stop, she couldn’t. It just rolled over her again and again.

A wolf’s mate. Amillionairewolf’s mate.

“Sorry,” she breathlessly tried to say. “Sorry, I ca-can’t. You do see how this is hilarious, right? I go from a victim of theft and betrayal, to falsely accused and fired, to on the run, to a wolf’s mate?” She dabbed at the tears in her eyes. “I don’t even think I can be surprised anymore. Anything else you want to tell me?”

“No,” his voice was rough. “That was pretty much the gist of it.”

“Well. What do we do now? Do I get a say in this? Do I get to decide ifIwant to be your mate?”

It was insane, but Elizabeth didn’t think she would mind spending the rest of her life with Canaan in the compound. They could work during the day and game a bit in the evening before feeding Myrtle.

It sounded so simple. So easy.

But she knew nothing in this life was easy.

“I wouldn’t force you to do anything you don’t want to,” Canaan blurted out. “I don’t expect you to fall into my arms just because of this.”

“Only, Ihavefallen into your arms. We kissed, and now, I think it might have meant more to you than it meant to me.”

“You have meant everything to me the second you stepped foot in my home. That won’t change no matter what happens between us. You’re my responsibility.”

She stiffened. “Excuse me? I amno one’s responsibility. I wasn’t even my mother’s responsibility when I was a child.”

“I didn’t mean it like that,” he sighed, his big, strong shoulders sagging. “There are no strings attached to my help. You stay here as long as you like, and I promise to keep my hands to myself. I won’t kiss you or touch you ever again …”

He paused and took a step closer. “If that’s what you want.” He touched his fingers to her chin, lifting her head to look into her eyes. “I will do everything in my power to help you clear your name, but I hope that you’ll want to keep me around after that.”

He pressed a kiss to her hair before heading inside. Canaan didn’t look back. He would have seen Elizabeth shaking her fist at the moon if he had.

She’d asked for a sign, but she’d gotten more than she bargained for.
