“And then Preston died, and you can’t forget. Tommy is not the one, Gene. You guys hesitated with getting married, and you kept pushing it off for a reason.”

He rested his head on Ethan’s shoulder.

“I know.”

People took their pictures and he knew that they were going to be in the paper.

The tabloids.

“I can move over,” Gene offered when he saw some guy in shades try to low-key take pictures.

“Nope. They tell the world I’m cheating on my wife all of the time. When I was the Director of the FBI, I had an affair, supposedly with some woman who worked for the government. I never did. I will say that if I ever was going to cheat, it would be with you—not some blonde like Melanie.”

Gene shuddered because that was something he did when they were first with each other.

It made Ethan laugh.

That was their longest-running joke.

“Can I ask you a question?” Gene inquired.

Ethan sipped the coffee in his free hand and waited for his oldest friend and ex to go there.

“Sure.”

“Would you still be with me had I not left for NOLA?” he asked. “Would we still be at the FBI? Would we have gotten married? Maybe had a family like you do now?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“Probably.”

His heart skipped.

“I’m sorry I left you behind. Looking back at it, I’m not sure why I did. I woke up one morning, and I was like…I need to apply for a job there.”

He let him in on it.

“That would have been the Shaman. He liked to meddle. He told me once in confidence that he felt bad that he put me with you only to make me lose you.”

“Woo-woo shit?”

He nodded.

“Woo-woo shit.”

“Well, he scared the hell out of me.”

Ethan reassured him.

“You would not be alone. Elizabeth was the only person who wasn’t afraid of Timothy. She was picked by him to be the salvation of his boys.”

“Do you forgive me?”

Ethan did.

“Absolutely. I was never angry with you when you came to me and asked me to leave. You knew I couldn’t. Were you angry with me?”

He shook his head.
