“Okay. What?”

“Ax, Thomas Bernard wants a way back into the local police. He said he wants to be our inside man.”

There was silence.

Oh, she knew her boss.

She was both appalled and weighing if this would help the FBI out in New Orleans. She’d bet her boots on it. Axelle had been CIA, and she knew a gift opportunity when it landed in her lap.

“I mean, we could use an inside man—if he survived. Any cop tied to us is in trouble there. Did you tell him that was a possibility?”

“Yep.”

“And he still wants to do it?” she asked.

“Yep. Only, how do we make that happen? He disappeared. That’s going to take a miracle or some really dumbass cop who does the hiring to buy some excuse.”

Axelle smiled.

“Let me work on it. I part the Red Sea daily. I keep you in control. That’s the mother of all miracles.”

HAR.

HAR.

She was funny.

Now, she didn’t feel bad about asking about the guns and gear.

“Thanks, Ax. I’ll tell him.”

“We can always use an inside man. He’s going to have to be hella strong to hold up, but if he can, we’re set.”

Well, why not tell her everything.

“And I’m also hiring Gene for my division. Look at me filling positions like you’re making me do.”

Axelle paused.

“How is that going to work with his fiancé down South?”

She sighed.

“He thinks he’s after my man. The wedding is over, and they both are imploding. For Ethan, I need to hire Gene and save his ass. I know he’s fifty, and that’s going to be a stretch.”

Axelle could break the rules on occasion.

“If he’s going to take cases in your division, I can use that he had over a decade as a Fed in our favor. You can hire him. Mozel tov. I don’t really care at this point as long as you put asses in chairs in that office.”

Oh, she was aware.

“I did hire a new manager, a techie, and now an agent. That’s three people in a month.”

She snorted.

“You have ten more positions to fill. Get to getting, princess. You’re stressing me out.”

Elizabeth laughed.
