The only thing the dogs loved more than Elizabeth was playing with balls.

Ethan whipped them one by one across the yard and into the trees.

“Go,” Elizabeth said as the dogs whined to be released from their sit.

They took off, giving them some privacy.

As Ethan reached them, he held out his hand and shook Lewis’ in greeting.

“Captain. It’s good to see you again,” he admitted. “You’re a little far away from your web.”

Lewis grinned.

“Looking good, Blackhawk,” he said. “I can’t help it. I like hanging around your wife. She pays well.”

Oh, he was sure.

If Reaper was in their yard, the shit was going down in New Orleans. As for them knowing each other…

Ethan had used his skills a few times when he’d been the boss, so they were familiar. Granted, the man was very familiar with his wife.

She reassured him that she’d never had a relationship with this man, but Axelle had. They’d been bed buddies after he took some time off from the military as he transitioned into the Spider unit.

Yeah, it was funny how the world was a small place.

“I try,” he said, giving his wife a kiss. “And I’m sure that her paying you is out of my paygrade.”

That it was.

And Ethan was grateful for that.

Truth be told, Elizabeth was holding up far better as someone leading the FBI than he’d ever had. Someone could multitask.

He was NOT that someone.

Ethan focused on his wife, and already, he knew there were huge-ass issues.

“You have that look on your face, Elizabeth,” he admitted. “Spill it, Baby.”

She did.

“I have to take a trip tomorrow,” she said, glancing at her watch. “I’m going to be out of communication for a few days.”

Oh.

Hell.

No.

They’d done that, and it had been torture watching NOLA being blown up, and not knowing if his wife was safe or in danger.

If she was going, he was going.

Besides, he had wedding plans to work on with Gene, and it was easier in person.

“Am I correct in suspecting you’re going to New Orleans, the city of disasters?”

She nodded.
