Someone had gotten too big for his britches, and she was about to put him in check.

And scare the shit out of him.

She moved closer.

Oh, there was no doubt who was the alpha predator in the room.

HER.

“The Hunters are vital to stabilization in this port city. If you damage that, you will go missing, and that is from the head Hunter herself. I’ve been a Fed a long-ass time, and I’ve seen some shit, Thomas. If you risk Maura, Jagger, or this operation out of spite because you were spurned by a man…it will get ugly. I can pull the plug on your job prospects here. I can pull the plug on you.”

He was shocked.

And scared.

“I wouldn’t…”

She shut that down.

“Then don’t make threats when you can’t follow through. I can, and I will do just that. We all know that dirty cops exist, and you’re about to find yourself eyeball deep in them. I’m your life raft. You get me with a hole or without one. That choice is yours.”

And with that, she was officially done.

Someone was burning that bridge, and it wasn’t her or The Hunters. She was allowing him to leave the team.

That was a gift, and he’d better not look that horse in the mouth.

Period.

Since she was finished dealing with a child, she walked to the dresser and pulled a suitcase from under the bed. Then, she packed Gene’s things.

They’d simply get the rest of his things shipped or purchase replacements.

Elizabeth was done playing.

The whole time, she said nothing.

The silence was telling.

“Elizabeth,” he finally said, getting her attention.

She looked over.

“I’m sorry. I’m upset. I won’t risk any of them. Despite this, I love them. They were my family for a little while. I’m going to miss them.”

He sat on the bed.

Because she believed him, and he wasn’t trying to make her angry, she came over to sit beside him.

“They love you, Tommy. I know you’re angry about that, but also know that if it gets dangerous here, if you reach out to them, Maura will get you out.”

He nodded.

Then, he cut that last cord.

“Please take care of Gene. I love him. I just can’t be with him right now. Maybe we can work it out, but for now, I have to do this. I have to prove to me that I’m not just some second-rate player in this. I’m a good cop.”

She patted him on the back.
