“Why are you doing this?” he asked. “Why are you taking this on?”

She was honest.

“I made a promise years ago when my ass was saved by some Marines. I vowed I’d forever be in their debt, and I keep my promises. I can’t save them all, but I can save as many as I can. Save him, Doctor. Gamble is a good man, and he deserves a chance to be happy again.”

He accepted it.

“I’ll prepare for him. Get him to me, and we’ll take care of it.”

She nodded.

“Thank you, Doctor.”

“Poe. Please.”

She smiled.

“Thank you, Poe. If he needs anything, contact me. I will make sure he has it.”

“I will, Director.”

“Elizabeth.”

He smiled, and there were dimples in his cheeks.

Then, the video call ended.

From where he stood, Jagger just shook his head. This woman…

“What?” she asked.

“Those Marines don’t need you to be in their debt. They did what they were paid to do.”

She hugged him.

Why?

Because she was worried about Gamble. She was worried about them. She was worried about…everything.

It was the mother in her.

When he set her free, she knew what they needed to do.

“I’m going to have him transported as soon as Poe gives me the go-ahead. Can you explain to him what’s going to happen?”

“I can. He’s not going to care. He’s planning on dying to be with them.”

She was aware.

“I don’t care what he wants. He’s not dying on my watch. This shitshow is mine, and I’m making sure all of you nuts get through it.”

He laughed.

“Forced living. Funsies.”

She snorted.

“Seriously. I never saw this coming in my life. All I wanted was to be a Fed and make a difference.”
