Silently.

While Eve heard Maura reassuring her husband, and she could hear a play-by-play from Mamba outside the door, this took finesse.

The whole time, she was focused strictly on the mission at hand to ensure that she did this right.

There would only be one chance without alerting the entire building.

For all they knew, this woman might not be alone in the apartment. In fact, the whole building was filled with people, and she and Jinx didn’t need to kill civilians.

As she opened the window, it was to the bathroom. Luckily, no one was in there. The door was closed, so that gave her time to get in the tiny-ass window and move across the limited space.

Adder moved effortlessly, like she was weightless.

That was one of her skills.

Put her in a field of dead grass and debris, and you’d still never hear her coming.

At the door, she placed her ear against it. There was talking going on just beyond it. It appeared that someone was up and watching TV.

NOLA had a different schedule if you lived or worked here. People went to bed late, and slept late more often than not.

Basically, the shit went down after dark.

Slowly, and praying the door didn’t make a sound, she opened it enough to see the living room.

There was a woman on the couch.

Carefully, she moved into the apartment, and toward the other rooms to clear them.

Once there, she saw that there was a man in the bed. She couldn’t see his face, but she could see his arm. The holographic picture MATE had pulled up was perfect.

This was going to be Milo Hix.

Bingo.

They found one of them.

They had two subjects in the house, and she had to disable the more dangerous of the two before they continued.

At the bed, she took one more step closer to him, and the floor creaked.

Instantly, he was up, and he pulled a gun.

That’s when the scuffle began.

It wasn’t easy to sneak up on a well-paid mercenary, and there was no doubt that Artemis Dubois warned him that his ass would be in trouble.

Now, Eve hoped her husband stayed calm.

Moving into action, Adder grabbed his arm, got the gun, and knocked his ass back into the bed where she broke his arm, knocked out two of his teeth, and put him to sleep.

Temporarily.

“Baby! Are you okay?” Dakota asked, hearing the scuffle over the transmission.

There was fear in his voice.

Only, she couldn’t answer.
