“Where were the guns?”

“In the front of their pants. They are tucked down the front.”

Her fingers touched something.

It felt like…a bar.

Maybe a crowbar?

Remington began working on his ankles.

“I have this,” she said, crawling back toward him. They were now moving at a steady speed, and that meant they were leaving the city.

He reached for it and found it with his hands.

“Okay. I can use this.”

She sat beside him.

“Why is she doing this?” Calyx whispered.

He heard the tears.

“Because she’s an asshole. Don’t worry, Baby, she’s not getting you. I’m not letting you be raped by her hired douchebags. We’ll be okay. We have the element of surprise.”

Thank God.

“Did they hurt you physically? Are you bleeding?” he asked, as he took a moment to feel her face, checking her from memory.

She reassured him.

“No. They tried to chloroform me. Only, I saw it coming. I faked it and held my breath.”

He dropped his arm around her shoulders.

“That’s my girl,” he said, kissing her temple. Had they hurt Calyx, he’d be that monster. He’d find them and kill everyone they loved.

He still might.

“You’re bleeding,” she admitted. “You took a bad hit to the head.”

Oh, he felt it.

Remington had a headache, and he could feel the wetness in his hair. They’d clocked him good.

“How long do you think we’ve been traveling?” he asked. “Guestimate it for me.”

“Twenty minutes. They feel like they’re moving really fast. They said forty-five minutes to the warehouse, but these guys are booking it.”

They both knew why.

Her.

They were picturing what they were going to do to her. Well, there was no way he was letting that happen.

“Okay, give me a few to feel my way around in here so I can figure out a way to get the jump on them.”

Remington moved around, feeling the parameters of the box truck. With the small window over the cab, he could see that they wouldn’t have many choices.
