Standing, he was able to touch the roof.

With the rolltop back door, that meant he could spider monkey it up the walls, bracing himself, and leaving enough room for the door to be rolled up.

Well, that was his only choice.

He tried it, and he was able to hold himself above the cargo area by using his hands and feet.

That would mean he’d have only one shot to surprise them. Chances were, they wouldn’t have their guns out. They’d expect them to be bound and out cold.

He lowered himself.

Then, he sat beside her.

Looking at his watch, he could see the glowing hands on the compass built in.

They were going west.

“I need something to scratch into the metal. We have to find something.”

“Like what?” she asked.

“A screw, a nail file, or…”

She had an idea.

“A bobby pin?”

He grinned in the shadowed darkness of the truck cargo area.

“Exactly.”

Reaching into her red hair, she pulled out three bobby pins and found his hands.

“Remind me later to kiss you,” he said, trying to keep it light.

“I wish you would now because I’m freaking out.”

He held her, and his mouth found hers in the darkness. As he soothed Calyx, kissing her gently, but filled with love, he tried to reassure her with touch alone.

He tucked her hair behind her ear and broke the kiss.

“We’ve got this. I’ll get them, you find the keys, a phone, or anything we can use.”

“Okay,” she said, feeling better.

“The only thing West where there could be a warehouse is the swamps. They have to be taking us somewhere where Artemis has a base. She’ll have a place for the guns, money, and assets she’s prepared for the Russian.”

“I hate her.”

He laughed softly.

“Join the club. I was kind by not ending her. Now, I see that was a mistake. She’ll pay for what she wants them to do to you.”

She hoped so.

She wanted her to bleed.

Calyx was a survivor, and despite her past, she wasn’t going to be someone who was used, abused, and tossed to death. She’d fight to the end.
