He laughed and jogged away.

“Let’s see what we can find deeper in the building. Stick together,” she said.

Jagger was so close to her that his hand was on her lower back, making sure she was within arm reach in case something went south.

When they moved into a hallway, MATE alerted her.

“You have a wire five feet in front of you. You can step over it. It’s nine inches off of the ground.”

She loved having MATE on board. This made her life so much easier. It had been a while since she’d had to breach a building with likely explosives waiting for her.

“How do you know?” Jagger asked.

“It’s giving off radio frequencies. There is a bomb attached. There could be a secondary incendiary device.”

Well, fun.

Carefully, they stepped over and headed past to move deeper into the building.

Not far away, they went down some stairs. In the basement, they found cells.

Cages for people.

Oh, boy.

There was no doubt what they were for.

“If she snagged Remington and Calyx, this was where she’d have them. They were bait too. She was taking anyone she could to hedge her bets.”

She was a bitch.

Not far away, there was a doorway with a steel door and keypad box.

Someone was locking it down for a reason.

“Uh, what do you suppose is in there?” Eve asked, finally breaking her silence.

“Not sure, but we need to know. MATE, can we get access to the room?”

The system hummed.

“There is a tripwire right in the doorway. You can, but you have to step over it.”

That was doable.

She held the box to the door.

MATE did her thing.

“Thank you, MATE.”

“It is my pleasure, Major.”

To enter, Maura pushed the door open, and took a high step over whatever it was that she couldn’t see but MATE said was there.

Once inside, they found something fun.

Someone’s personal space.
