She told him everything. When she updated him on the mission—which was being handled due to national security, Axelle knew he’d take it serious.

But she still added the last part.

“And now, we suspect she and I are next. Artemis is going to make our lives dangerously difficult.”

Gabe got focused.

Fast.

“I’m sorry? She’s gunning for Elizabeth and you?”

Oh, they’d bet on it.

“She has someone on the inside. That’s the only way she could have any of the intel. She ratted out the Snakes to El Gato. She passed on intel about Remington to him. She’s up to her eyeballs in it.”

“Is Elizabeth sure?”

“Yes, and worse, she thinks the guy on the inside is the Director of the CIA.”

Oh, boy.

That was bad.

“Bob?”

“Yes. We can’t handle that. You have to do it, Gabe. You know that Elizabeth is seldomly wrong about things like this.”

He was aware.

“I’ll handle it.”

She appreciated that.

“Thank you, Gabe. How are you doing?” she asked. “Do you need anything?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“I’m fine. Why would you ask?”

Uh, well, maybe because his wife and child had been abducted by a lunatic and she’d been killed in cold blood?

That tended to rattle people.

“Just asking,” she said. “I’ll let you go. I have to get to NOLA. I’m going to be out of the office tomorrow. I’ll be remote if you need me.”

“Just handle the situation if you don’t mind. Please.”

She stared at the phone.

Did Gabe just say…please?

What?

The?

Hell?

“Sure, Mr. President. Sorry to bother you at this time of the night.”
