Hanging up, she tucked away her phone.

“Remind me to hurt that woman,” Duke said. “If she thinks she can come for my family,” he added. “I’ll get mean.”

Elizabeth patted him on the leg.

“There’s no need, Duke.”

He glanced over.

“What do you mean?”

She didn’t even flinch.

“Artemis Dubois is already dead. You can bet on it.”

And that said it all.

Someone was not playing.

Not this game.

Meanwhile…

The last person she wanted to bother at this time of the night was the President of the United States of America, but this was the nature of the beast.

Her shitty luck too.

Dialing his private number, he answered immediately, despite the time.

“Yes, Axelle. What can I do for you?” he asked.

The tone was disturbing.

Gabe was a cranky bitch, but since Livy’s death, and what his daughter went through, he was so much calmer.

He was nice.

That was some freaky-deaky shit right there. It was alarming.

“We have a situation.”

“Okay, what can I do for you? Is Elizabeth okay?” he asked, again.

“Yeah, she’s in NOLA. They are handling the situation about to come stateside.”

Gabe was aware.

He knew where Elizabeth was at all times. She was his star and also someone he cared about. When Livy was killed, she’d saved Coraline, and had been helping him navigate a life as a widower. She had been helping all the kids, and stepping in to cheer them up.

“And?”

“Something came up.”

Now, he was curious.

Elizabeth was self-sufficient. She rarely needed his help with anything.

“What?”
