The man she loved wasn’t doing so well, and there was no way she could help him.

Pulling out the phone, she saw there was no reply back. It was likely that they didn’t get the message, or that she was not in a place where she could receive messages.

That meant one thing.

Shit.

She had to go outside.

Heading toward Remmy, he was out cold, and she wished she had some meds for him. When she came back in, she was going to see if she could find anything.

Maybe there would be something to help him break through the fever.

What she knew was that she had to get another message out.

By morning, he’d be burning up or dead.

Without a doctor, medicine, and a way to bring his fever down, he could die on her, and that was the last thing she wanted.

She wanted…no, she needed him to live.

“Remmy, I’m going to go try to send another message. I’ll be right back. Stay here.”

Heading out, the lightning and thunder did battle, and she was about to climb a tree with a phone making herself a lightning rod.

Great.

How could this get worse?

As she climbed the tree, another flash happened, and she turned on the phone, praying for it to load quickly.

When it did, she saw something.

Jagger had replied.

Opening it, she saw the message. They were coming for them. The Major knew they were in the bayou, and they were on their way.

God.

She felt a million times better.

Sliding down the tree, she raced back to the door, and when she got inside, she was shocked.

Remington was sitting up.

He was looking down at his hands, his face blocked from her view. When he lifted his head after hearing her, he looked out of it.

“Remmy?”

He blinked at her.

“Karen? Is that you, Honey?” he asked.

Calyx’s heart hurt.

Not only because he was still mourning his wife, but because he was still mourning his wife.

It was a conundrum for her since she resembled the woman.
