When she didn’t answer, not sure what to say, he finally spoke.

“Baby,” he whispered. “I thought you died.”

Oh, shit.

What was she supposed to do?

“Was it a dream?” he asked, looking around the place as if he was seeing something she wasn’t.

“No, Remmy. I’m dead. I died.”

He closed his eyes.

The tears came.

“I’m sorry, Karen. I somehow fucked up. It’s why you and Kelsy died. I made a mistake. I just don’t know how. I was so careful. I did everything right to keep you hidden and safe, but it didn’t work.”

She approached Remington and sat beside him. Calyx took his hand and gave him what she could. If she would never have him, at least she could maybe save what was left of his heart.

Yes, he said he cared about her, but…

Remington was still holding onto Karen and his past.

“You didn’t do anything. It wasn’t your fault, Remmy.”

He wiped his eyes on his bare arm as he sat there on that threadbare couch, naked and lost in the fever dream.

“Did you suffer?” he whispered. “I saw the pictures of what they did to you. Did they hurt you?”

She kissed his cheek.

“No. Kelsy and I were gone long before. They killed us fast, Remmy. We didn’t feel anything. The pictures were just to make you feel pain. We felt none.”

The sigh that came from him was the weight of the world coming off of his shoulders at her telling him that.

She knew it.

“Thank God.”

His body shook.

“It’ll be okay, Remmy. You have to get over us. We’re safe now. Kelsy and I are together, and we’re never going to hurt again. You have to let us go.”

He turned his head.

“Will you hate me if I love again?” he whispered. “I found someone I think I could be happy with,” he said, his voice so low.

Calyx’s heart kicked in her chest.

Oh, God.

This felt amazing and horrible all at once. These were this man’s innermost thoughts and feelings, and she felt awful that he was unknowingly sharing them.

She gave him that peace.

“I will never hate you. Ever. I want you to set yourself free, Remmy. You’ve suffered for ten years, needlessly. We’re good. I promise.”

“Remember what you told me when we got married?”
