“Yes.”
He kissed her knuckles.
“I’m sorry that you died before me. I know you worried about me dying first and wondered how you would live. Now, I know how hard that was. I lost you.”
“Tell me about your love,” she said. “What’s her name?” she asked.
He smiled.
The corners of his lips curled up.
“She’s bold,” he said. “She’s beautiful, and her name is Calyx.”
She hoped that he wasn’t only with her because she looked like his dead wife.
“She’s nothing like you, Karen, and maybe that’s a good thing. I let you into a world that I knew you couldn’t survive. Calyx…she’s strong and a fighter. I know that she can hold her own.”

“Does she love you?” she asked.
He laughed.
“I don’t know why, but she does. I’m older than her, but she feels…like she’s always meant to be.”
Calyx felt that way too.
“Maybe I was a bridge to get you there. Maybe you met me to lose me so this journey would start and get you to her.”
“She was a hooker.”
Calyx held her breath.
“And I don’t care because I only see the most beautiful woman. I’m glad she had the life she had. It made her tenacious. She’ll fight hard to survive, and I need that.”
Calyx knew he genuinely loved her, and that waiting for him was the best thing that she ever did.
“I hope you have a good life together,” she said, tears filling her eyes.

He’d only been waiting for his dead wife’s approval, and now, he had it.
“I hope she brings you happiness and makes your life feel full.”
“She does. I’m sorry I have to let you and Kelsy go. I promise to honor you both every day. She knows about you, and she’s a good person. She’s gentle with my heart.”
Calyx kissed him on the cheek.
“Then you should take her on a date. You should just love her while you have her because we are not guaranteed time, Remmy. We have to live for the moment.”
He smiled again, and in that moment, he was the most handsome man in the whole world.
