For both of them.

On top of that, Ethan was going to be performing their wedding. He was able to do it, and that meant the world to Gene.

Now, his blood pressure was going up.

Gene erupted.

“Keeping you alive is all about me? Leaving to not have you die is about me? Are you kidding? I’m trying to keep you from dying!”

Tommy stared at him.

“You’re afraid. I’m not. If I die, I’ll go down honorably.”

Gene stared at him.

Oh.

Fuck.

No.

He was not burying another husband who didn’t know how to use self-preservation to live.

Pass.

Gene was officially done.

“Okay, then, Tommy. Do what you have to do because I’m going to do what I need to do. If it works, we’ll do it together. If not…whatever.”

Tommy lifted a brow.

“Are you breaking up with me?” he asked.

Gene stared him in the eyes.

He was exhausted from this city. He came here years ago after leaving the man he loved, found his way to another, and now, the man he wanted to marry didn’t understand.

NOLA was a death sentence for them. They’d been marked as Hunters. There was no ignoring that.

If he stayed here and remarried while Tommy went back to be a cop…”

It would just repeat itself.

He knew it.

Gene was brutally honest.

“No. I’m not breaking up with you, but I think that we need to put the wedding plans on hold until we figure this out. We aren’t ready to get married. Clearly, we want two different things.”

Tommy stared at him.

“I see.”

“Do you? When you’re afraid of something, Tommy, like that Ethan would swoop in and steal me away, we dealt with it as a couple. I’m telling you I want to leave. I’m telling you that I’m tired. I’ve been in NOLA for a long time. Over a decade. It wore me down. You’ve been here not even two years. I need to go, and as my partner, I would hope you’d go with me.”

He stated a fact.

“And I will go with you if you want to move to Michigan, Hawaii, or Alaska. I’m not going to DC. That makes me uncomfortable. That’s too close to your ex and you’re not hearing that. If we go, we never see them again. If we go, we cut this off and live our lives sans this crazy.”
