And there it was.

That felt controlling.

Gene would move anywhere, but it was that last line that made him vastly uncomfortable.

“So you want me to never see my family again?” He asked. “The Blackhawks are my family. Elizabeth is my family. Those kids call me Uncle Gene. I’m the godparent for Dolly.”

He understood, but if they were going to discuss comfort, his feelings mattered.

“And you were with one of them in a relationship for years. You were so close to being a common-law spouse. How long were you both a couple, Gene?”

“Seven years.”

He stood there.

That was a long ass time.

Tommy didn’t quit his questioning, but instead, went deeper.

“And was he the love of your life?”

That hung there.

Why?

Because Ethan had been.

No one had made him feel like Ethan did. Only, you didn’t always get to be with that soulmate. Life took twists and turns, but he’d admit that when he was with Ethan, he was the happiest.

It had been heaven.

This was turning into a New Orleans Hell.

He’d lost so much here and had his heart destroyed. Preston proved that love was fragile.

He loved Preston, too, and fate took him away.

Tommy was getting angry.

“Answer me. I think I deserve to know what I’m up against. Was he the love of your life?”

Gene finally answered, choosing not to hurt Tommy.

“He was ONE of the loves of my life.”

Tommy stared him in the eyes and didn’t buy that for a single second.

Call it a hunch.

“Be honest. Would you have married him all those years ago, had you not been in the closet and could get married to a man?”

Jesus.

Why were they going there?

It was the past.

It was over.
