Ethan moved on, and so had he. They stayed friends, and he was still his best friend to this day.

“Tommy.”

He got angry.

“Be honest, Gene! Would you have married him and still been with him even today?” he asked, rage there simmering. “Had he left DC with you, would you have married him and still been with him today?”

Gene didn’t lie.

If anything, he believed in honesty.

“Yes.”

And there it was.

Tommy walked to his shaving kit and grabbed it from the dresser.

“And that’s why I don’t want to move there. That’s too tempting a lure. I’m not crazy. I’m not moving a thousand miles away for you to be faced with temptation.”

He blinked.

“Temptation? Like I would cheat on you and break up Ethan’s marriage? He’s happy. He has a family and has Elizabeth, Chris, and Callen. He’s not looking to rekindle jack shit. We’re friends, Tommy. A guy can be friends with someone and not want to fuck them.”

Tommy said nothing.

At first.

Then, he laughed.

“Oh, okay. No, men cannot. If they are sexually attracted to someone, they go for it. Every time. No one buys that ‘we can be friends’ bullshit.”

“I ‘buy’ it.”

Tommy was done. He knew Gene was still in love with Ethan now, and he was getting all of his heart or none of it.

Period.

“Moving there is my hard no. Yours is me going back to the police in NOLA. We are at a stalemate.”

“Do you want to die?” Gene asked.

He wasn’t bothered.

Why?

He had faith in himself.

“They don’t know why I left. Half of the police are gone and replaced. I could go back and fit in seamlessly. I really can do it.”

Gene saw their relationship crumble, but he didn’t want the man to be hurt.

He still cared.

“No, Tommy. Please don’t do that. It’s a death sentence.”

“You don’t think I can survive, do you?”

It was his fear.
