“Remington was lured there. She wanted him in the country, and no one questioned it, but now, pieces are falling into place.”

Ethan knew where this was heading.

“Something is bugging you, isn’t it?”

“And Maura. She’s bothered by it too. It’s not just me, EJ. This stinks.”

He let her talk.

“Someone had to pay the guerillas. I’m betting Artemis used her CIA connections to find them. She set Maura’s team up, and she also decided she wanted something else.”

He knew what.

“Remington,” Ethan said.

She nodded.

“Only, he was happily married. At some point, he had to have mentioned that to her. In CIA records, he was single. He opted to not let anyone know the truth. Much like how my father fucked me over with a marriage license, Remington did the same. A small farming community with a low count when it came to people…”

Ethan shook his head.

“She wanted him, he wasn’t available…”

“And a woman scorned is ugly. We get mean. How can she get rid of the obstacle?”

“Kill the wife and kid,” Gene said.

Elizabeth nodded.

“Remington is back in Columbia doing the deed, and meanwhile, El Gato isn’t dead. Artemis had to know that. Remmy told me he was drugged and ended up having sex with her. Twice.”

“Addiction,” Ethan said.

Gene knew what that meant.

“Jesus. He was raped.”

She nodded.

“The next morning, he’s still a little drugged up, does it again, and then feels guilty like it was his choice because this time, he’s aware of what’s going on.”

Gene was horrified.

“Oh, it gets worse. Jinx informed me that Remington had a picture of his wife in his wallet. On it, there was a banner for a local fair. How much do you want to bet she drugged him, trying to get information from him, or found that picture?”

“She’s foul,” Gene admitted.

“Yeah, and she passed the intel to El Gato telling him that Remington was the one who got his compound blown. So the man McLostIt, and gets revenge. He abducts his wife and daughter and does what he did to them.”

Gene had seen the pictures.

They’d suffered terribly. They’d been burned, assaulted, tortured, and the daughter had been abused worse.

That was to make Remington pay for El Gato’s wife and child.

“But proving that is difficult,” Gene said. “I’m all about putting a bullet in her, and calling it a day, but how did she get the intel on everything else.”

Good question.
